Suriya's Soorarai Pottru under Sudha Kongara's direction released last year on Amazon Prime Video turned out to be a phenomenal success for the actor, who apart from producing the film under his 2D Entertainment banner in association with Sikhya Entertainment, also earned rave reviews for his performance. Based loosely on the life story of Captain GR Gopinath, the founder of  Air Deccan, Soorarai Pottru had also released at the Chennai International Film Festival (CIFF) earlier this year, with the film being declared the winner for the Best Film award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2021 on Friday. If that wasn't enough for good news, IFFM has also made the announcement that Suriya will be taking home the award for Best Performance Male (Feature) for his role in the film. Check out IFFM's tweets below:

Captain GR Gopinath, who served as the major inspiration for the plot of Soorarai Pottru, too took to social media to express his happiness at the film and Suriya taking home the accolades from the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. He tweeted, "Soorarai Potru awarded best actor and best film awards at the Indian film festival of Melbourne." The success story of Soorarai Pottru is unlike any other in recent times for a Tamil film considering it had initially been announced for a theatrical release, but opted out in view of the pandemic and eventually premiering on Amazon Prime Video. However, even after the film was set to come out on the leading streaming platform, the makers faced a delay in acquiring a NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the Indian Air Force (IAF) as the story revolved extensively around aviation.

Apart from Suriya, Soorarai Pottru also had excellent performances from other stars starting with the film's heroine Aparna Balamurali, who rose to the top in a number of important scenes. Likewise, veteran Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal, who made his Tamil cinema debut in the film, earned a positive feedback for his earnest performance, while the supporting cast among whom included Urvashi, Mohan Babu,Vivek Prasanna, Krishnakumar, Karunas, Kaali Venkat shone bright in their respective roles. Composer G. V. Prakash Kumar's music in Soorarai Pottru turned out to be a major USP and elevated the film on several occasions.
