In a shocking incident, residents of a village in Kannauj district, Uttar Pradesh, assaulted, tonsured and blackened the faces of a 37-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man with physical disabilities, under suspicion of an affair on Wednesday. 

The woman's husband had committed suicide two months back and her relatives had suspected her of having an affair with the physically-disabled man as they were neighbors. They were made to wear garlands made of footwear and paraded in the village, while being filmed by residents, which has since led to outrage on social media, with netizens calling for stringent action towards the act of public humiliation. 

Two of the woman's relatives, among whom include her brother-in-law, have been arrested in the Gursahaiganj police station area. In a statement, Kannauj SP Amrendra Prasad Singh said the victims were dependent on farming and were living as next-door neighbors. The woman's relatives were unhappy that the physically-disabled man was helping her and resorted to engaging in such an action after the two were reportedly spotted together. 

A police team had gone to the village, which is about 122 km from state capital Lucknow, after a video of the incident began doing the rounds on social media, which has since caused an uproar among people from across various parts of the country. An FIR was later lodged by the police basd on a complaint fro the woman at Gursahaiganj station and eight people, all from the Dalit community, were arrested.
