With scientists and researchers hard at work in their efforts to fund a cure for coronavirus either in the form of a vaccine or a drug, a Congress Councillor in Karnataka has come up with his own suggestion to keep the disease at bay. Congress leader Ravichandra Gatti from Ullal city, which is 12 kms from Mangalore, appeared on video and recommended to his followers to drink rum and eat two half-fried omelettes to beat the COVID-19 virus.

In the video, Ravichandra Gatti is seen holding a bottle of liquor and saying, "I suggest you add a teaspoonful of ground pepper in 90ml rum and stir it well. After drinking it, eat two half-fried eggs to make sure the coronavirus goes away,". Mr Gatti added that he tried several medicines, but none of them worked in his favor. He goes on to assert in the video that only rum and eggs will work. He also states, "Many people are there in Bengaluru and Madikeri who drink rum but I do not drink or eat fish," while adding, "I am not suggesting this as a politician, but as a member of the corona committee." The video, which has since gone on to become viral on social media, has drawn numerous comments from people from all walks of life.

Mr Gatti has been known to the people in Ullal as a social worker for nearly 15 years. It is being reported that Congress leaders in Mangaluru are planning to hold a discussion regarding the statements he has made in the video. Reports further state senior Congress leader Ugrappa chose not to comment on the video while MLA U. T. Khader was not reachable on his phone.

Although Mr Ghatti is said to have been last active on WhatsApp on Tuesday evening, his phone has since been unreachable. An official at the Ullal Municipal Commissioner’s office has stated that councillors have been made members in the ward-level COVID task force committees.

Karnataka recorded more than 3,693 new coronavirus cases on Friday taking the tally to 55,115. The death toll due to the disease in the state currently stands at 1,147 with 115 casualties reported yesterday.
