Tamil Nadu government on Friday issued a new media bulletin in regard to combating the COVID-19 outbreak stating that 4,538 fresh positive cases were recorded on July 17 taking the total number of cases in the state to 1,60,907. The total number of active coronavirus cases across the state including those in isolation as on today is 47,782.

There were 1,243 new coronavirus positive cases reported in Chennai taking the district's total to 83,377 cases. Chennai is continuing to show a significant decrease in the number of cases despite being the worst-affected district in Tamil Nadu. On the other hand, Madurai, which had been witnessing a sharp rise over the past few days, today recorded 262 new cases, taking the district's total 7,858 cases. At present, Chennai city alone has 14,923 active cases while Madurai is following suit with 3,043 active cases with people currently undergoing treatment under home quarantine.

79 people died on Friday across Tamil Nadu due to COVID-19 taking the state's death toll up to 2,315 casualties. Today’s coronavirus death toll is the highest ever in a single day to date in the state with the government informing people to adopt and follow the guidelines issued for their health safety and well-being. Meanwhile, the recoveries count keeps progressing forward at a steady pace as the past 24 hours have seen 3,391 patients getting discharged taking the total number of recoveries to 1,10,807. 

The total number of samples tested across in Tamil Nadu today are 48,669, which is the highest to date in the state, while the overall count currently stands at 18,31,304. Likewise, the number of persons tested today are 47,579 with the total in the state going up to 17,56,998.
