Complaints from the public are aplenty over the past few days specifying that exorbitant charges are being collected by private hospitals to treat coronavirus patients. Moreover, office bearers of Indian Medical Association (IMA) - Tamil Nadu have forwarded a request to the government regarding the treatment charges being demanded by private hospitals. Subsequently, a panel constituted under the chairmanship of Secretary (Health) has furnished corresponding details to the government as regards daily charges to be collected from COVID-19 patients and other related terms and conditions in private hospitals. The government, after going through the submissions, has fixed the capped rates, with a view to help patients undergoing treatment in private hospitals.

The government has said that asymptomatic patients and those showing minor coronavirus symptoms have to spend Rs. 5,000 per day for treatment in private hospitals. Furthermore, patients suffering with serious symptoms have to shell out Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 15,000 every day for intensive care unit treatment. The government has made it specific that the rates fixed are maximum and no additional charges should be collected. Private hospitals have also been given instructions to allocate 25% of the available beds to patients under Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami's Comprehensive Insurance Scheme.
