A 30-year-old woman riding a scooter was hit by a truck when she tried to avoid AIADMK flagpole which was lying on the road, on Monday. The police registered a case against the lorry driver and the lady was under intensive care.

Rajeshwari, alias Anuradha, was riding her two-wheeler along the Avinashi Road around 8.30 am when the accident occurred. The lady, who is the sole breadwinner of the family, was on her way to her office in Gokulam Park. As she was riding, a flagpole fell on the road in front of her and Anuradha swerved, trying to avoid hitting it. She lost balance and fell on the road and her legs were run over by a lorry that came right behind her. Passersby rushed the woman to a nearby hospital and informed the family.

A relative said that she underwent seven hours of surgery to redeem nerves of one leg; the other leg has heavy multiple fractures. According to sources, the flag poles were planted along the road for a family event of one of the local partymen. Police sources said that the partymen had obtained the necessary permission before planting the flags. The lorry driver has been booked under IPC sections 279 (rash driving) and 337 (endangering life or safety of others).

Meanwhile, AIADMK counsellor C Jayagopal, who was in judicial custody for the past 45 days over the death of Subasree, made bail on Monday. His brother-in-law Meganathan, who was also in custody, was also granted bail. The duo were arrested after an illegal banner they had erected on the road fell, killing a 23-year-old techie named Subasree. In their bail application, they refused the responsibility of Subasree's death saying their supporters had erected the banner out of love, without any action from them.
