India's coronavirus tally crossed the 33-lakh mark on Thursday after 75,760 fresh cases were recorded during the course of the last 24 hours, as per a statement by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This is by far the highest-ever spike for COVID-19 cases than any country in a single day since the outbreak. As on today, the country's total cases count has gone up to 33,10,235 and includes 7,25,991 active cases.

The Union Health Ministry's latest data further states that 56,013 patients were discharged upon recovery from hospitals after treatment for the infection, with the total for the cured/discharged/migrated currently standing at 25,23,772. Deaths reported due to COVID-19 are 1,023 across the country, taking the toll to 60,472 casualties to date.

Maharashtra currently has the highest number of active coronavirus cases with 1,73,195 cases and 23,089 patients succumbing to the fatal disease in the state. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has stated that 9,24,998 samples were tested on Wednesday, while over 3.85 crore samples have been tested so far.

The Health Ministry has further added that Delhi at present has reported a recovery rate of 90 percent followed by Tamil Nadu with 85 percent, while Bihar stands at number three with 83.80 percent, followed by Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli at 82.60 percent, Haryana at 82.10 percent and Gujarat with 80.20 percent. The lowest Fatality Rate recorded in the country is in the state of Assam at 0.27 percent, followed by Kerala with 0.39 percent.

Medical experts at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Wednesday said that the novel coronavirus can now also affect almost all organs in the human body and not just the lungs as believed earlier, while adding that the initial symptoms may be totally unrelated to chest complaints that have been commonly reported. They stated that the classification of COVID-19 cases ought to be relooked based on whether they are mild, moderate and severe categories, in order to include other organ involvement and not the respiratory symptoms noticed so far.
