Suriya's Soorarai Pottru has turned out to be a grand success for the actor after its grand premiere last November on Amazon Prime Video, with the film being hailed by fans and critics alike. Directed by Sudha Kongara and featuring chart-buster music by G. V. Prakash Kumar, the action drama jointly produced by Suriya's 2D Entertainment and Guneet Monga's Sikhya Entertainment banners continues to be one of the most-watched Tamil ventures on the leading OTT platform. Soorarai Pottru, which revolves around the character Nedumaran Rajangam overcoming obstacles at every turn in order to make it big in the aviation industry with his own airliner, has been basking in massive glory of late and has now entered the Oscar 2021 race in the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score, and several other categories.

Soorarai Pottru and Mmmmm: Sound of Pain are the two Indian ventures to secure a place in the list of 366 films, with the voting for nominations to be held from March 5-10. It has been revealed that the final nominations list will be announced on March 15, 2021. Apart from Soorarai Pottru competing in the Best Picture category, the film's lead stars Suriya and Aparna Balamurali are also competing in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories. If Soorarai Pottru makes its way to the final list of nominations for Academy Awards 2021, it could be a huge milestone for the Tamil film industry and Indian cinema altogether. It is to be noted that Soorarai Pottru was earlier made available in the Academy Screening Room, with the film now finding a place among the 366 films eligible for a Best Picture nomination at this year’s Oscars after the recent screening.

The latest announcement from the Academy committee is no doubt great news for the entire Soorarai Pottru team, including the Tamil film industry and Indian cinema and is testimony of the film's theme overall - flying high despite the obstacles. Suriya's Soorarai Pottru had skipped its theatrical release due to the pandemic and was subsequently announced for an OTT release, which as well initially got pushed from October 30 to November 12 after a delay in obtaining the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Indian Air Force (IAF) as the film revolved extensively around aviation.

Suriya's Soorarai Pottru continues to be one Tamil film that garners a massive talk on social media for its performances and technical aspects, with praises being showered on director Sudha Kongara for a tightly-packaged screenplay and the lead stars Suriya and Aparna Balamurali. The film also had incredible performances from its supporting cast among whom include veteran actress Urvashi, Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal, Telugu superstar Mohan Babu, Karunas, Vivek Prasanna, Kaali Venkat, Krishna Kumar, with composer GV Prakash being celebrated for his massive contribution in the form of his chart-buster songs and thunderous background score, Dubbed in Telugu as Aakaasam Nee Haddhu Ra, Soorarai Pottru has been inspired from the life of Captain GR Gopinath, the founder of the Air Deccan airliner.
