Rajagopal was better known as a family man who was worshipped for his generosity by his employees and the diners. He was also known for how his pursuit of the unwilling employee Jeevajothi Santhakumar, less than half his age at the time, led to him being accused and eventually convicted for the murder of Jeevajothi’s husband. The court had initially convicted Rajagopal and four others to ten years of imprisonment but the Madras High Court later extended the jail term to a life sentence for his monstrous deed. After surrendering to the authorities, Rajagopal suffered a heart attack and died on 18 July 2019.

T. J. Gnanavel made his directorial debut with the 2017 coming-of-age romantic comedy film Kootathil Oruthan, starring Ashok Selvan and Priya Anand in pivotal roles. Gnanavel not only directed the film but also wrote its story, screenplay, and dialogues. But it was only in 2021 with the Suriya starrer Jai Bhim that show him to fame. The film was received with equal amounts of praise and speculations for its controversial subject matter. The film also was chosen as the official entry into the 94th Academy Awards ceremony.
