Premalu released on February 9 ahead of Valentine's Day has turned out to be one of the biggest blockbusters in Malayalam cinema history reportedly grossing more than 125 crores at the box office, while winning the hearts of the audiences. The romantic comedy set amidst the backdrop of Hyderabad revolved around the relationship of Naslen and Mamitha Baiju as Sachin and Reenu, while actors Althaf Salim, Shyam Mohan, Akhila Bhargavan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Sangeeth Prathap, Shameer Khan, among others appeared in supporting roles.

It remains to be seen whether Premalu 2 will pick up right after the events of Premalu and showcase where Naslen and Mamitha Baiju as Sachin and Reenu are in their relationship, and there will no doubt be huge expectations when the film comes out next year. The Malayalam film has garnered appreciation among Tamil cinema audiences too after it was dubbed and released in cinemas on March 15 to a rousing response. The Premalu 2 announcement has come a week after Premalu made its streaming premiere on April 12 and all sights will be set on what director Girish AD and screenwriter Kiran Josey have in store in the sequel for Naslen and Mamitha Baiju.
