We hear that this Special Committee is looking at using Drones and special planes to spray insecticides to combat these locust swarms. An Additional Secretary will be heading this Committee and they are already in talks to procure the equipment for these measures. Drones would be used to spray insecticides on tall trees and inaccessible areas while helicopters would be used for covering large areas, to spray insecticides! This latest locust infestation is said to be the worst in our country in the last 27 years and the threat is high as these Desert Locusts have the capacity to destroy hundreds of hectares of crops in just a day. 11 Regional Control Rooms have been established to review the locust control operations and with the help of pesticide sprays, the infestation has been contained within regions of Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat! Our Indian Government has reached out to procure 15 air sprayers from the UK and a further 45 more from other places. Stay tuned for updates...
