The 2011 heist action blockbuster, Mankatha, continues to remain etched in 'Thala' Ajith's minds and hearts and is one of the biggest box office successes for the superstar, who played an anti-hero with his performance being showered with praises as a memorable one to date. Billed then as Thala 50, the film also starring 'Action King' Arjun, Trisha, Raai Laxmi, Anjali, Premgi Amaren, Andrea Jeremiah, Vaibhav, Mahat Raghavendra, Ashwin Kakumanu among others in supporting roles was directed by Venkat Prabhu under Dhayanidhi Alagiri's Cloud Nine Movies banner and featured chart-buster music by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
Nine years later, Mankatha continues to have a legacy of its own and was recently telecast on a popular TV channel during the coronavirus lockdown the entire nation is at present facing. Post the airing of the film, fans had taken to social networking forums to reminisce the time when it had released leading to Mankatha costume designer Vasuki Bhaskar as well coming on Twitter and sharing a never-before-known secret. Vasuki spoke about how director Venkat Prabhu had wanted a chain for a dollar to be worn by Ajith in the film as the accessory was going to be crucial during the climax sequence. The team had zeroed in on a handcuff-shaped chain dollar, which laid emphasis on Ajith's character, Vinayak's backstory in the film as a disgraced cop.
Vasuki's tweet is as follows: "Director wanted a chain with a dollar for #hero as it played a major part in the climax scene were he removes & throws it to e fire. We felt e hand cuff would work as he plays a cop off duty.On e 1day of shoot b4 e 1 shot e hand cuff was finalised #Mankatha #Trivia @vp_offl". *NOTE: Vasuki's tweet is not spell-checked.
