The Greater Chennai Corporation on Monday released a list of the containment streets across the 15 zones in Chennai described to have positive coronavirus cases. A total of 198 containment streets have been demarcated in these 15 zones which include Thiruvottriyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur. A total of 523 positive cases have been identified across these 15 zones in Chennai with Royapuram recording 145 cases as on April 27 morning 10AM. The first of the containment measures in these streets in Chennai began as early as April 3 with 168 barricades placed in order to restrict the movement of the public during the ongoing lockdown period so as to avoid the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called for a nationwide lockdown across the country starting from March 25 to April 14, which eventually got extended to May 3. Furthermore, speculations have been rife for a while now that a third lockdown could also be brought into effect in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus, which has affected more than 28,000 people with over 800 deaths to date.
Social distancing during this lockdown period across the nation has been emphasized by PM Modi, Chief Ministers of all states and medical and health officials. Tamil Nadu too is witnessing a complete curfew lockdown from April 26 to April 29 between 6AM to 9PM as a measure to try and restrict public movement in the hopes of curtailing the spread of the COVID-19 virus, which has so far taken the lives of 24 people with 1,885 positive cases recorded in the state so far.
