The world continues to struggle with the effects of the coronavirus, after originating in Wuhan in China, with the number of positive cases spiraling upwards with the passage of each day. Likewise, Turkey has now become the first Asian country in the world to record over 100,000 coronavirus positive cases with the nation's death toll standing at 2,491 and more than 18,000 people making a recovery, according to Johns Hopkins University. With the pandemic a massive threat and a cure for COVID-19 yet to be found, health experts say the true death toll around the world is much higher in comparison to the numbers provided by Johns Hopkins' tally, owing to limited testing and the complications in the counting of the dead during the ongoing crisis.

Turkey in the past 24 hours has recorded as many as 3,116 positive COVID-19 cases with 115 people succumbing to the fatal disease and approximately 40,962 tests carried out as well. In order to stop the spread of the coronavirus in the country, Turkish officials had ordered for the closure of schools, restaurants and other public spaces while also making restrictions barring people under 20 and above the age of 65 from leaving their homes.

The Turkish government has initiated complete lockdowns during the weekends for all with it being expanded to four days this week from Thursday to Sunday. There has been plenty of debate surrounding the restrictions in Turkey ordered by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in order to combat the spread of the coronavirus. Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is from the political opposition, has expressed his disappointment over the previous 48-hour lockdowns including the one last weekend, calling them as ineffective.
