20-year-old Goldi from Uttar Pradesh walked nearly 80 kilometres from the city of Kanpur to her fiance, 23-year-old Veerendra Kumar's house in Kannauj to get married. The couple were initially supposed to enter wedlock on May 4, but the ceremony got postponed as a result of the ongoing coronavirus lockdown. The young couple maintained contact constantly on their phones after transport services across the state remained shut because of the nationwide lockdown, which was first imposed in March. Both were upset after Goldi's parents decided to postpone the wedding for the second time owing to the restrictions in the state.

Goldi, hailing from the Laxmanpur Tilak village in Kanpur, decided on Wednesday to take to the roads and walk all the way to Veerendra's home in the nearby Baisapur village in Kannauj, which is around 120 kilometers from the state's capital, Lucknow. Veerendra's family, who were taken aback and surprised by Goldi's unannounced arrival, quickly made arrangements for the marriage to take place in a nearby temple, all in accordance to social distancing norms. Images from the wedding had shown Goldi clad in a red saree with Veerendra sporting a white shirt and blue denim jeans with the couple also seen wearing masks in order to not take any chances against the novel coronavirus, which has affected more than 5,000 people in the state to date.
