The Japanese company, SkyDrive Inc., successfully tested for the first time a flying car on August 25 at the Toyota Test Field. A public demonstration had taken place at the car company's development base, which is regarded as one of the largest in Japan, the company said in a news release. The testing of the flying car for public demonstration was incidentally also the first in Japanese history.

Named as SD-03, the car took off and circled around the field with a pilot for about four minutes. "We are extremely excited to have achieved Japan's first-ever manned flight of a flying car in the two years since we founded SkyDrive... with the goal of commercializing such aircraft," CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa said in a statement. He added, "We want to realize a society where flying cars are an accessible and convenient means of transportation in the skies and people are able to experience a safe, secure, and comfortable new way of life."

Described as the world's smallest electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle, the SD-03 occupies space of about two parked cars, the company's statement further read. The vehicle also includes eight motors in its hardware as measures to ensure "safety in emergency situations."

Design Director Takumi Yamamot stated, "In designing an unexplored, new genre of transportation known as the flying car, we chose the keyword "progressive" for inspiration." He added, "We wanted this vehicle to be futuristic, charismatic and desirable for all future customers, while fully incorporating the high technology of SkyDrive.”

SkyDrive went on to state that they expect the flying car to become a part of normal life and not be viewed upon as a piece of merchandise. The company has said that more test flights will be carried out in the future and under different conditions in order to monitor the safety aspects as well as the technological improvements as per the industry standards.

With the test flight turning out to be a resounding success, there is talk that further flight tests will be carried outside of the Toyota Test field by the end of the year. The company has also said that they will carry on forward with developing technologies to safely and securely launch the flying car in 2023. As of now, no price on the flying car has been announced.
