Vaginismus

Vaginismus is a condition where the woman is unable to have sex. In very severe forms of vaginismus the woman jumps at even the thought of having sex.
If you have extreme pain when trying to have sex with your partner , chances are you have vaginismus . This needn’t always be sexual ,even insertion of tampons or a gynaecological examination can be impossible .

It is assumed that 6- 12 % of the women population suffer from vaginismus. Psychosocial, cultural and relational factors may  be responsible for vaginismus , although a single factor cannot be attributed to this condition.
In India unfortunately sex before marriage is considered a taboo and thus most cases of vaginismus are hidden from parents and doctors. This condition usually comes up after a woman is married for a certain period of time and unable to consummate the marriage . Most of these couples give up trying because they do not get proper treatment or guidance from their gynecologist . Let me tell you today that this condition is treatable.
Vaginismus should also be differentiated from vulvodynia and vestibulitis. A simple Kegel’s exercise or trying to force a dilator is going to make matters worse and won’t help resolve the condition.

A vicious cycle where the first reaction of a thought of penetration tightens up the pelvic floor muscles which causes excruciating pain which later leads to fear and the same cycle continues till the patient is psychologically affected by this condition. Most women give up and resort for IUI or IVF/ICSI for trying to conceive , but given a bit of time and patience , this condition is easily curable.
Vaginismus was combined with dyspareunia, the other “sexual pain disorder,” which resulted in genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder (GPPPD).
Vaginismus is graded according to its severity and treated accordingly. This condition requires a team approach from the cosmetic gynecologist , psychologist and the couple working together to fix it.
