An MMTS Hyderabad local train crashed head-on into a passenger train which reportedly was waiting for clearance on the same track on Monday at Kacheguda. At least 10 people were grievously injured and efforts were on to rescue the pilot of the MMTS train, who reportedly was stuck inside the debris.

According to sources, the Kurnool City-Secunderabad Hundry Intercity Express was awaiting signal for departure near Nimboli Adda, around 500 metresfromKacheguda railway station when the MMTS train from Malakpet, which was on the same track, hit it. The pilot of the MMTS train is thought to have missed a signal and overshot. Efforts are on to rescue the hapless pilot, who has been stuck in the debris for over four hours. Around 10 people were lifted out of the MMTS train injured, and more people were being rescued with minor injuries. However, there have been no casualties yet.

Three bogies of the MMTS sustained damages and the train service was suspended on the track all morning. Sources said that arrangements were being made to lift the bogies off the track. Railway sources said that the mishap could be considered one of a lower magnitude. As the trains were very close to the at Kacheguda, one of the three central stations in Hyderabad, the MMTS train was running on a relatively lower speed. The magnitude of the crash would have been bigger if the train was faster or if the other train was also moving. Southern railway officials are actively taking stock of the situation atthe accident site and an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
