Deepan Boopathy is a popular film producer who has bank-rolled hit films, including Puriyatha Puthir starring Vijay Sethupathi, under the banner Rebel Studio. Apart from production, he has also distributed many hit films domestically. He is known for his unwavering proficiency in the Tamil film industry for over 20 years. The producer has a profound niche in picking commendable content that is reflected in his diverse filmography. Galatta Media got to do an exclusive interview with the versatile Deepan Boopathy. Here's the full interview:

What drew you into becoming a film producer initially?
Initially, I was drawn to the field of film production due to my involvement in numerous industry projects, where I held various roles, particularly as an Executive Producer. During this time, Anirudh encouraged me to pursue a career as a full-time producer. It was important to gain hands-on experience and develop a comprehensive understanding of the industry before fully immersing myself in production. Since then, embarking on this path has proven to be an incredible and rewarding journey for me.

What are the challenges that today’s producers face?
Today's producers face numerous challenges, particularly due to the rising influence of OTT platforms. These platforms often prioritise purchasing films featuring star popular actors and actresses, leaving little room for smaller films and filmmakers to gain recognition. Additionally, the limited duration for which content remains available on OTT platforms poses a challenge, as it restricts the exposure and promotion of movies. This lack of support for independent filmmakers and films is a pressing concern, as the industry should strive to provide a platform for diverse voices and stories. Furthermore, the shift in audience preferences towards home viewing on OTT platforms adds to the challenges that producers face, who must adapt their strategies to cater to this changing trend while promoting theatrical experiences for larger-scale productions.

Watching actor Silambarasan TR from a young age, How do you feel about his success in the recent hit films?
Having known actor Silambarasan TR for two decades, I am thrilled to see his remarkable success in recent hit films. From a young age, he has demonstrated extraordinary talent and unwavering dedication to his craft. It is truly inspiring to witness his journey unfold. Silambarasan TR's contributions to the industry, starting from his childhood, have been invaluable. Balancing school and shooting commitments as a child is no easy feat, yet he managed it with grace. He is not only an exceptional actor but also a true gentleman. I firmly believe that STR is destined to become a global star and an icon in the entertainment world. His current success is well-deserved and long overdue. I have no doubt that his achievements will serve as an inspiration for generations to come. I have had the privilege of witnessing Silambarasan TR's growth and witnessing his genuine passion for his work. I am confident that his journey towards becoming a global icon has only just begun, and he will continue to leave an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.

Can you reveal something about your upcoming projects?
I am deeply passionate about creating movies that delve into our cultural heritage and showcase the incredible diversity of India. I aspire to produce realistic films that resonate with the common man, addressing real-life challenges and capturing the essence of day-to-day life. My primary focus is on targeting the youth and creating content they can connect with on a profound level while entertaining and inspiring them.

I am currently working on some exciting projects that will be launched at the opportune moment. These ventures will positively impact the film industry and contribute to society. I am committed to creating meaningful, thought-provoking content that resonates with audiences and brings positive change.

How has the production sphere changed post-Covid?
The post-Covid production sphere has witnessed significant changes, particularly in financing. Securing funds for small films has become more challenging as investors and production companies have become more risk-averse. The emphasis has shifted towards projects with proven commercial appeal, such as big-budget films featuring established stars or franchises.

Additionally, market values for film rights, including regional rights for remakes, have declined due to cautious buyer behaviour. Streaming platforms have gained prominence as distribution channels, prompting many production companies to create content exclusively for these platforms. These changes reflect the industry's adaptation to the pandemic's impact and evolving consumer preferences.

As a producer, what do you look for in young talents who approach you?
I primarily look for compelling content that has the potential to resonate with audiences. Content is the king, as it forms the foundation of any successful project. Additionally, I value young talents who possess an enthusiastic mindset and a genuine passion for filmmaking. Their passion and dedication are vital for long-term success in the industry. Understanding the mindset of the audience is also important, as it allows for the creation of relatable and impactful stories. Lastly, I aspire to work with individuals who are willing to push boundaries and strive for innovation, bringing fresh perspectives to the table.

Silambarasan TR's Pathu Thala directed by Obeli N. Krishna and produced by K. E. Gnanavelraja's Studio Green in association with Jayantilal Gada's Pen Studios banner and featuring music by Academy Award-winning composer A. R. Rahman is all set for a grand release in theatres on March 30. The actor interacted with the press on Friday to speak about his experiences working alongside his co-stars and technicians, while also expressing his happiness for the support that A. R. Rahman has shown for him and the film. Simbu said, "There's a lot we have to learn from Rahman sir. He had to perform at his Sufi concert and work on the re-recording for Ponniyin Selvan: 2 back-to-back after our audio launch. Now, he's once again working on Pathu Thala and I will always be grateful for the love he has shown towards me."

During the Pathu Thala press meet, STR also revealed how he was impressed by Gautham Karthik's effort in the action sequences. He explained, "Many have said that he (Gautham) doesn't show the pain he bears. A person who takes such pain upon himself with a humble attitude will rise higher in life. It's no easy task to perform action, but I was left stunned by how he pulled them off effortlessly." Simbu then spoke about how director Obeli N. Krishna accomplished to find a balance of the screen time for all the actors in Pathu Thala and said, "He's done what Lokesh Kanagaraj did with the actors in Vikram by giving everyone a scope and space to perform."

Speaking about sharing screen space with filmmaker Gautham Menon for the first time, Silambarasan stated, "He too has acted in this film. As far as I know, I'm not sure whether we will be able to do Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu: Part Two since he's now appearing in almost all the films. He's gotten so busy these days. And, once this film comes out, he will get much busier. Usually, only a few directors will be perform and show how the actors need to emote and he's one of those people. I feel happy to have acted with him in this film." STR and Gautham Menon have been a highly-successful combo as the duo delivered box office hits like Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada, and more recently Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu Part I: The Kindling

Actor Gautham Karthik will be looking to kick off 2023 on a strong note as his first big release of the year, Pathu Thala, starring Silambarasan TR in the lead role is set to launch in theatres on March 30. Awaiting the release of his August 16, 1947, in April, the Kadal actor recently sat down for an interview with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, to share his experiences about working alongside STR, while also explaining how Pathu Thala had changed hands from Kannada filmmaker Narthan to Sillunu Oru Kaadhal director Obeli N. Krishna.

Speaking about his journey of working in Pathu Thala and how it's different from Mufti in Kannada, Gautham Karthik said, "I think it’s gonna be a feast for the general audience. It was quite a journey because originally it was I think most people know now. It was a remake of Mufti, and by the same director Narthan, who had come here and decided we will do it here in Tamil. And, STR and I were on board with Studio Green and we shot for about 18 days in June 2019. There was then a huge gap and then Corona happened obviously, and then Krishna sir decided, 'Okay I will take it up. I will revamp it.' So, we can tell now that it's been inspired rather calling it a remake."

Gautham Karthik added, "There are characters with the same traits. There are characters, which aren’t there in Mufti at all. There are lines similar to Mufti and there are lines that are totally different. When I see the film, now I can’t see the same movie. I watched that film too. I really like that film and now I have a totally different character from what Srimurali sir has played there. And, when I was doing it before, I was scared because if you’ve seen him, physically he is huge. He has got a presence and one rough voice, and it looks good for that character. I began thinking how was I going do this. I have a very soft face and I don’t look terrifying, I don’t look imposing, that power isn’t like that. When we were thinking how to change that image, Krishna sir came up with the idea of the long hair and the grunge look. He even said, 'Why don’t we try different angles for you?' So, we played around. If you watch the film, I’ll have a totally different feel to it and we really experimented on this character. And, I finally got into a perfect body language, mannerism and I’ve done whatever I best could. The audience should tell if it has worked out or not."

Silambarasan TR is gearing up for the release of his first big film of 2023, Pathu Thala, which is slated to open in cinemas worldwide on March 30. The flamboyant star is currently not in India and is expected to return to Chennai ahead of his upcoming film's audio launch, which is reportedly being planned to be held in the city on March 18. With the buzz for Pathu Thala getting bigger, STR has now shared a video of his interview with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus on Twitter, in which he can be seen speaking about his urge to do roles that will satisfy his hunger to perform. Apart from sharing a video clip of the Galatta Plus interview, Simbu wrote in his tweet, "Patience is a virtue. It took a lot of faith but it’s worth the wait 🙏🏻  #STR48"

What's most interesting about Silambarasan's tweet is the use of the hashtag #STR48 thus signaling his new confirmation about his next film. This latest hint at the actor's next big film will no doubt as a massive reason for his fans to celebrate as they have been waiting for quite sometime to hear him talk about his next venture. There has been some chatter over the past couple of days regarding STR joining hands with director Desingh Periyasamy of Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal for a film and it remains to be seen whether this collaboration will happen with STR 48. It is to be noted that Simbu had also announced STR 48 to be titled as Corona Kumar back in 2021 under Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara fame Gokul's direction and whether the film is the same will be known soon.

Simbu, who took part in the Galatta Plus interview for the promotions of Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu Part I: The Kindling in September 2022, is seen talking about how he wants to do roles that are completely different and new. He says, "I have not decided any film now. There are a lot of scripts and I have heard them. Few interesting films with directors are there, but I am very hungry right now. There is an enormous amount of hunger inside me to do something really out of box. I do not want to explain what I want to do. I am in that space of being hungry to perform or act like never before. The last time I got this feeling, I took up Manmadhan. Maybe I have to direct a film like that or find a script like that now. There are few interesting scripts in the lineup, but I want to do something that would satisfy my hunger to perform. So I am taking the time to find the right project."
