The first phase of the 2024 general elections began on Friday, April 19, in all the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu, with several leading Tamil cinema celebrities casting their votes at polling stations in Chennai. In that light, Tamil actor Soori too went to cast his vote earlier today, but was met with a disappointing news that his name wasn't in the electoral rollss. The popular comedy star posted a video on social media addressing the incident saying he wasn't able to cast his vote in the General Elections 2024 despite having fulfilled his democratic right in the previous elections.

Soori said, "I came here to fulfill my democratic duty. I have fulfilled my right and cast my vote in all the previous elections. But, it's being said at this booth that my name has been left out. My wife's name is there. My vote isn't there. I came here to fulfill my democratic right and it's heart-breaking that I'm not able to do it." He further stated, "I don't know whose mistake this is or how it has happened. Instead of casting my vote and telling others to vote, I'm saying this with the pain of not being able to cast my vote that you all should fulfill your democratic duty. It's extremely important and good for the nation. Cast your votes without fail. I will hope that I will cast my vote in the next elections."

On the work front, Soori, who made his debut as a hero in Viduthalai Part 1 (2023) under National Award-winning Tamil filmmaker Vetri Maaran's direction, is donning the khakhi once again for the sequel, Viduthalai Part 2, which is expected release in the second half of the year. Having made his start in Tamil cinema as a comedian, the popular actor will be seen once again as a hero in the much awaited Kottukkaali directed by Koozhangal (2021) fame P. S. Vinothraj, which was selected to be screened in the Forum section at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival back in February. Soori will also be seen in the lead role in the action-drama Garudan alongside Sasikumar and Unni Mukundan directed by R. S. Durai Senthilkumar, who has made films Ethir Neechal (2013), Kaaki Sattai (2015), Kodi (2016), and Pattas (2020).

'Kottukkaali': Soori explains the extreme steps he took to get his throat damaged for his role, says "Felt that my voice sounded artificial"

Tamil actor Soori stunned fans in Vetri Maaran's Viduthalai Part 1(2023) and is now once again garnering immense praise for his performance in Kottukkaali directed by Koozhangal (2021) fame PS Vinothraj. Yet to be released in theatres, the film also starring Malayalam actress Anna Ben recently garnered the distinction of being the first Tamil film to have its world premiere at the prestigious 74th Berlin International Film Festival. With terrific appreciation pouring in for the Kottukkaali team at the Berlinale, Soori recently sat down with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, to talk in detail about his role, including explaining the methods he adopted to get his voice altered.

Speaking about his role in Kottukkaali, Soori said, "It was quite difficult, but also challenging. I had to cover my neck with a paste made from crushed limestone powder and sugar during the film's shooting. This is usually done in villages if there are problems in the neck, which will pull down everything and make it clear. So, when the film begins, something big happens and the story starts only halfway, and I had to wear it throughout the entire shoot. We shot in sync sound since there was no dubbing and I had to speak like my throat was sore. This can done at one juncture, but I had to follow this till the end. The next thing was performing in the same manner alongside nearly 10 artistes and I would have to focus on my body language, and my dialogue delivery, which I had to be conscious about not speaking in my normal voice. If I delivered the dialogue in my normal voice, we'd have to go for another take and doing the scene once again is extremely difficult. This was a really big challenge for me. But, after the screenings, many foreigners who watched the film asked me, how I managed to follow the same voice modulation till the end? When I told them what I did, they were left in shock."

Soori further stated, "I acted as the director explained about the character, but I still felt that the voice sounded artificial and wondered how it would be if it were damaged for real. So, I decided to consult a doctor and he suggested me some medication and treatment. I explained to him that I wanted my throat to be damaged. He laughed and told me not to do that. He said that as a doctor he usually is asked about clearing the problems in the throat and that this is the first time that he was posed with such a query. I then made several requests and asked him for suggestions. He asked me for what purpose was I making such a request and I told him that it's for a film. He was extremely reluctant initially, but later told me to adopt natural treatments instead of English medicine."

Explaining his efforts for his role in Kottukkaali, Soori added, "I noted down the doctor's suggestions and sought from nature the things that would make the throat choke and not allow you to speak properly. I would then mix them all up and leave it my mouth overnight, which would not let me speak the next day. I would get asked why was I doing so much, but I knew that I would feel okay in a week's time. But, as I kept doing that continuously, it started to pain after a point of time. That is how I managed to do a voice modulation and it helped me out till the end."

Tamil actor Vishnu Vishal's next film, Lal Salaam, will see him sharing screen space with 'Superstar' Rajinikanth starting February 9. The upcoming sports drama film is Aishwarya Rajinikanth's big filmmaking comeback and features music composed by Academy Award winner A. R. Rahman. Vishnu Vishal, who is playing an aspiring cricketer alongside Vikranth in Lal Salaam, has now in an exclusive interview with Galatta opened up on collaborating with actor Soori once again after their fallout a few years back.

Soori, who worked with Vishnu Vishal in seven films, filed a case against the Lal Salaam actor's father Ramesh Kudwala (former DGP of Tamil Nadu), and financier Anbuvel Rajan, alleging that they had cheated him on a land deal. Vishnu Vishal, who addressed fans at the time to wait for the truth via a note on social media, has now in an exclusive interview with Galatta during the promotions for Lal Salaam revealed for the first time that he and Soori are back on speaking terms once again.

Responding to whether he will act alongside Soori once again, Vishnu Vishal said, "I'll share a news soon. You'll know about it then. The answers to all those problems and what had happened will be known soon. I'll definitely act with him as a professional. I'm speaking with him now. I'll show it to you on my phone. Me and Soori have started speaking again. Things are all okay. And, we'll tell everything that had happened. I'm informing this here for the first time here."

Vishnu Vishal further stated, "There were several problems during those 2-3 years. You hear about many things going wrong at the same time, right? Be it my past marriage or the issue with Soori, all those incidents happened during those 3-4 years. Everything is sorted out now, and I'm very happy and lucky. It's why I'm sitting here with so much positivity because my confidence is that there isn't a person who hasn't committed any mistakes. I too might have done wrong, but not on the levels as claimed and, there's that anger in me. But, since all that is set right, that outrage has come down. So, everything has been sorted out and everything is positive."

Soori is one of the leading comedians and supporting actors in the Tamil film industry, who has turned lead in the recent film Viduthalai: Part 1. The film was released on March 31 and is running successfully in theatres. Galata Media organised a fans meet for actor Soori, where he interacted with his fans and shared interesting information about Viduthalai Part: 1. As the anchor asked about the five things that he learnt from the film. The actor Soori said “Firstly, I think I learnt to act well and I will also keep on learning (the skill). Secondly, I have learned to drive vehicles anywhere even in hilly regions. Because, we did not use body double. Normally, artists do not drive in every shot in hilly areas like this. Sometimes, how we will shoot is, there will be a huge truck and the car or auto rickshaw or jeep will be on top of the truck and the artist will act like he is driving. Sometimes, Just like normal the jeep will run, there will be an actor and there will be a driver just like the artist, who will drive the vehicle. Like this, a body double was there on set for me and the lorry was also there, but I don’t think we used him even once. I did every scene myself. But the director (Vetri Maaran) will ask If we could (opt for a body double) but, I would say I can. Similarly, a body double was there for the stunt sequence too. The stunt choreographer will do a rehearsal with the body double artist and then when I reach the set I will do every stunt during takes. The master (stunt choreographer) gave me that confidence, I did not use any body double in the film. I did every shot myself” revealed the actor

Lift your hands if it’s 7. Then everyone lifted their hands.' Them Me and my friend started discussing. I lifted my hands. Then, my friend said no it's 8 and I said the teacher is itself saying it's 8 so let's drop our hands. He said listen to me it's 8, so drop your hand and convinced me. Then He made everyone who answered correctly more to one of the class. I confidently made another friend who studies well called Shivakumar, to drop his hands. Then the teacher made us count with our fingers asking how it could be 8 that time also I said it was only 8 sir so we both got beating. I remember it till today, sir." EXCLUSIVE: Soori explains his anger for Seemaraja and Saamy Square comedy's negative response - WATCH VIDEO!

2024-04-19T16:51:00 +05:30 tamil nadu lok sabha election 2024 soori opens up on his name not featuring in the voters list - Movie Cinema News

Leading Tamil comedy actor Soori is the talk of the town after his spectacular performance in National Award-winning filmmaker Vetri Maaran's Viduthalai: Part 1. With the period crime drama film turning out to be a success and all eyes now set for the second installment, which is expected to come out later this year, the comedian turned hero sat down with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, and opened up on the reason for his frustrated response to the reviews over his performance in films like Seemaraja and Saamy Square.

Speaking about angry response the backlash for his comedy in Seemaraja and Saamy Square, Soori said, "I don't remember now, but even if I did say something, it wouldn't be for a namesake. If I know the context of the situation both before and after, I'll be able to talk about it correctly. Victory and defeat are a part of life, right? Whatever I think has to be liked in the right manner by everyone is not always possible. At some juncture, my thought process might across as wrong to you. My actions might appear wrong to you. A comedian will be looking to score from the moment he steps out of his house till he finishes shooting for the day. As far as I know and my experience, all the other characters will get an instruction to do what's been planned. Only a comedian will want to score a lot more and get bigger claps. During those times, we'll have planned one thing and won't do it. In such occasions, I'll be ready to put in that extra effort, but on some instances, I won't get that space. In such a situation, I don't want to argue and achieve that. I personally will think that I don't want everyone's gaze to fall on me. I'll try to explain the comedy scene I have in my mind and your face will convey whether you approve it or we need to proceed to something else. I'll never waste the time."

Soori further explained, "I don't know who will have much experience in this, but more than a director or a cameraman, comedians will be more knowledgeable in this, I personally feel. The reason being they'll have done five films and the comedian has done around 150 films. In such situations, I'll try to explain with affection that the sequence will not work out as planned. There will be occasions where some scenes will get claps, but there are also instances where they have also failed. In such a scenario, I'll realize then that I argued for the scene to be made in a specific manner till the last minute during dubbing and should have rather listened to the director instead. On other occasions, the sequences have received big claps and the director will call me up and wish me. So, a comedian has that good little experience on what will work and what won't for the big screen."

In addition, Soori stated, "During such circumstances, we'll have done a few things and in some other instances, we won't be able do as we plan. And, sometimes, we won't be able to do for some heroes as we expect since we have to keep in mind their fans as well.  At such a time, I may have missed the mark. But, it's not really my fault. I'm ready to act. In a film, if something particularly is not right, they will point that out. But, when it comes to the comedy, they say the comedian has killed the entire film. How is that fair? Sometimes, what we plan doesn't happen. I too have told a few people that you're all speaking without seeing what has happened. But, you go and see how much hard work he's putting in to bring out the best. I recently told someone that as a comedian, I used to be serious all the time and would keep thinking about the sequence. But, as Kumaresan in Viduthalai, I was happy as a bee because all the responsibilities handled by the director. Comedy, on the other hand, is not like that. If I have combination scene with Vijay sir, I'll have to prepare for the entire sequence taking into consideration the other artistes and their responses."

2024-04-19T16:51:00 +05:30 tamil nadu lok sabha election 2024 soori opens up on his name not featuring in the voters list - Movie Cinema News

Leading Tamil comedy actor Soori made his hero debut in National Award-winning filmmaker Vetri Maaran's Viduthalai, which is garnering rave reviews. With the first installment of the period crime drama out now in theatres and all sights now set on when the second film will be coming out, Soori sat down for his first big interview after the film's release with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, and opened up on the missed opportunities that had come his way during filming Vetri Maaran's venture.

Speaking about the chances he had to let go of because of Viduthalai, Soori said, "I've thought about it. I've never taken the missed film opportunities to his knowledge because if he asks me I'll have to say that I had to let go off those chances. Similarly, like he says, if I have nothing, I won't be able to go when he calls me. He'll tell me to be ready this month, but he would have not gone for shooting that month. There have also been many days where there wasn't any shooting. And, if you look at it from his perspective, there will be several reasons. I have been like that on many occasions. Despite all that, the films I've done were the ones he had told me to act in. If I took this to him, he would tell me not to let go of the opportunity. But, there have been instances where I've rejected film offers without asking him. There have definitely been films I've let go along with the money that I will have earned with them."

Regarding what made him choose Viduthalai, Soori stated, "I'm not facing any financial hardships at this point. My bank balance might have increased and the number of films I could have done would have been more, but I realized that I would not get this opportunity ever again. I didn't know when such an offer would come along again. Similar to how I was noticed first by Susienthiran, I didn't know whether another director like Vetri Maaran would notice me. In addition, the audience is watching Soori regularly. But, I have the desire to do something different. I was offered a few more lead roles as a comedian. Instead of me sitting behind the hero on a bike, it would be me riding the vehicle. Even without a hero, it would still be a comedy film. I had the yearning and the belief to do something different, but there was nobody to bring it out from me. I realized this film would garner me a big name and it's because of the name Vetri Maaran. And, at that moment, while sitting inside my caravan, I was confident and told myself that this is a truly great opportunity."
