Leading Tamil actor-filmmaker Raghava Lawrence has confirmed that he will be making a special appearance in 'Captain' Vijayakanth's son Shanmuga Pandian's film, Padai Thalaivan. The Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023) star's latest decision has come after he announced earlier this year that he is ready to play a role as a mark of respect to the late Vijayakanth. On Friday, March 22, Lawrence and Shanmuga Pandian posed together for a picture signaling their association for Padai Thalaivan, which is being written and directed by U. Anbu and will feature songs and a background score composed by 'Isaignani' Ilaiyaraaja.

There has been quite a lot of buzz surrounding Padai Thalaivan, which had its title glimpse unveiled at the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party headquarters by Vijayakanth on his birthday last year. Lawrence's latest gesture has come after the actor honored the DMDK leader as a humanitarian who would step up to lend support and uplift the careers of many actors and filmmakers without any remuneration. Addressed as 'Puratchi Kalaignar' by his fans and followers, Vijayakanth passed away at the age of 71 due to liver complications on December 28, 2023.

Earlier this year, Raghava Lawrence appeared on video to talk about paying his tribute to Vijayakanth at his residence, while also sharing about how he was ready to make an appearance in the Tamil cinema stalwart's son Shanmuga Pandian's upcoming film. He said at the time, "I met Vijayakanth sir's wife, his two sons, and his sister. While we were talking, Vijayakanth sir's wife's sister asked me to oversee his son Shanmuga Pandian's journey in cinema. Those words stuck with me because Vijayakanth sir has done so much for many actors by appearing in guest roles in their films. He was a person who liked helping other actors come up in life."

Raghava Lawrence further stated, "In Vijayakanth sir's film Kannupada Poguthaiya, I did choreography for the 'Mookuthi Muthazhaghu' song and he danced wonderfully, and would encourage me a lot. So, as a homage to him, I wish that his son's film takes a good opening. Furthermore, if the makers of the film agree, I'm willing to do a guest role either in a fight sequence or a song or a scene. Since Vijayakanth annan has helped many heroes to come up, we have to see his son also rise and that would be a mark of respect to him. If there is any double hero subject for Shanmuga Pandian and myself, kindly do let me know and I will act alongside him. I also want to extend my greetings to Vijayakanth sir's son Vijay Prabhakar, who is now in politics."

'Jigarthanda DoubleX': Karthik Subbaraj explains what made him the most nervous before Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah film's release, explains his writing process (EXCLUSIVE)

Leading Tamil filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj has struck gold once again with his latest film, Jigarthanda DoubleX, which has been declared a blockbuster. The film starring Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah in the lead roles and featuring music by Santhosh Narayanan is continuing to witness a strong audience turnout in theatres, with praise pouring in for the entire team. With fans still debating the topics discussed in Jigarthanda DoubleX, including the impact of cinema as a whole, director Karthik Subbaraj recently sat down with Galatta to talk about why he was a bit nervous before the film's release, while also opening up about his writing approach.

Speaking about Jigarthanda DoubleX, Karthik Subbaraj said, "The response has been overwhelming because I was confident that the film would connect with audiences on an emotional level. But, I was also nervous since Jigarthanda was more in the humor zone, while this progressed on a serious path. I was optimistic, but also slightly anxious about whether they would see that as jarring and not accept the film. The way this film has been received by the audience has left us all extremely happy and the response has been beyond what we had expected."

In regard to the writing in Jigarthanda DoubleX, Karthik Subbaraj stated, "There is a story till the second half of the film and after that, it shows where it is going to take him (SJ Suryah). In order to change the story of his life for a film, he's being taken to a new place. Up until that point, there was a story. But, I didn't have a strong reason for where he was being taken to and what goes on to happen next as a result. In that way, almost nine years passed and during the post-production of Mahaan before its release, Lawrence sir asked me whether we could do the film. I just took some time then and thought about it. At the time, I read some material about forests for another script and suddenly felt that this might connect with [Jigarthanda DoubleX]. After that, I did some research and read books, and it all fell into place. Once the elephant poaching idea came into the story, I felt the script was complete. And, I then decided to dive in deeper and work on it, and took another three months to write the screenplay."

'Jigarthanda DoubleX': Karthik Subbaraj gives an interesting explanation behind the "elephant factor" in the Raghava Lawrence and S J Suryah film (EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW)

Blockbuster Tamil filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj is set to make a massive comeback to theatres this Diwali with his Jigarthanda DoubleX starting November 10. The period action drama starring Raghava Lawrence and S J Suryah in the lead roles featuring music composed by Santhosh Narayanan has been carrying tremendous buzz right from the get-go, with the recently released trailer skyrocketing the excitement among fans. With Jigarthanda DoubleX set for a big opening in cinemas everywhere, Karthik Subbaraj recently sat down with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, to talk about the highly-anticipated film, while also sharing the story behind how he arrived at including elephants as a major plot element.

Speaking about Jigarthanda DoubleX, Karthik Subbaraj said, "During the script discussion, I wanted to add an important element since the story goes in that way. I was talking to my discussion team and this was during the initial stages before I even started writing the screenplay. When I was discussing with my team one day, I felt that this film should have more of a forest and tribal connection and I wanted to bring that elephant factor here. Each of them in my team had a different opinion and one said that the film would enter a different zone with all the VFX, while another person said it would be great."

Karthik Subbaraj continued, "When I was leaving for my home from my office, I was pondering over whether I have to keep the elephant factor as an element in the story. As I took a turn on the road, I saw an elephant right opposite me. I was stunned. Although the elephant was one that you usually see placed in front of shops, it was being carried on a truck and it took me a few seconds to realize that I was looking at a dummy. It was at that moment that I called my team members and told them my decision to add the elephant factor because I felt it was like a sign. And, I also have a strong feeling that the script put the elephant into this. It made me choose that."

'Jigarthanda DoubleX': Raghava Lawrence opens up on the color discrimination he has faced, reveals S J Suryah's mass dialogue for him (EXCLUSIVE)

2024-03-22T16:30:00 +05:30 raghava lawrence to cameo in captain vijayakanth son shanmuga pandian padai thalaivan movie - Movie Cinema News

Blockbuster Tamil film director Karthik Subbaraj's Jigarthanda DoubleX is all set for a massive Diwali release in cinemas starting November 10 and the buzz for the Raghava Lawrence and S J Suryah-starrer is massive. The period action comedy film featuring music by Santhosh Narayanan had its trailer released last week to a rousing response from fans, with several interesting aspects from the visuals catching everyone's attention. Among the big highlights in Jigarthanda DoubleX is the dialogue and the character depiction of Raghava Lawrence as a gangster, who recently sat down with his co-star S J Suryah for an exclusive interview with Galatta.

Speaking about how there are references to a dark-skinned person playing the role of a hero within the story of Jigarthanda DoubleX and whether he experienced any similar discrimination in real life, Raghava Lawrence said, "Yes, there have been such instances in my life. 'Thalaivar' (Rajinikanth) was the one who broke that norm. At that time, a dark-skinned person also became a hero, rising to the range of 'Superstar' and giving us all the confidence. There have been times when there were people in cinema who would comment on a person's skin color and draw comparisons with MGR and Kamal Haasan. Even in a group dance, a fair-skinned person would be given preference over a dark-skinned person. All this was before Prabhu Deva master came to the fore. After he came onto the scene, he would call only people with talent to the front. Up until that time, there was [discrimination] and I too have experienced that. So, after going through all such experiences, when I was introduced as the first dark-skinned hero, I felt very happy."

Revealing that S J Suryah added his own inputs to hype up his character in Jigarthanda DoubleX, Raghava Lawrence said, "When he came to see me for the first time, he called me 'mannin maindhan' (son of the soil) and 'karuppu vairam' (black diamond)." S J Suryah chimed in saying, "I requested the director to add those words to the film's dialogue. The director accepted that concept because he too was in the same space or else he wouldn't have agreed to it."

The wait is over for Tamil cinema fans as the highly-anticipated Jigarthanda DoubleX trailer has now been released giving audiences a glimpse at the massive action in store in theatres starting November 10. The upcoming period action comedy film directed by blockbuster Tamil filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj and featuring music by hit composer Santhosh Narayanan is coming out as a grand Diwali treat in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada languages. With only a week left for Jigarthanda DoubleX to take theatres by storm, the film's trailer once again reminds us of the adeptness of Karthik Subbaraj in making a film that will draw fans to the cinemas.

The Jigarthanda DoubleX trailer starts off with a debate about a dark-skinned person playing the role of a hero in Tamil cinema for the first time and Raghava Lawrence, a gangster, aiming to reach the stars with the help of S J Suryah, who is a director and a former associate of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. The visuals then progress to display plenty of action with Lawrence in the midst of a clash with politicians and the police, while also showing Malayalam actors Shine Tom Chacko and Nimisha Sajayan in pivotal roles, with the ivory trade too set to be a major plot point in the story. The Jigarthanda DoubleX trailer is high on the action from start to finish and gives hope of a riveting and edge-of-the-seat entertainer along the lines of director Karthik Subbaraj's Jigarthanda (2014).

The expectations for Jigarthanda DoubleX have been huge right from the get-go and fans will be looking to witness explosive performances from Raghava Lawrence and S J Suryah once again. Director Karthik Subbaraj will also be aiming to hit the high note once again with the film as it is his first big theatrical release after Petta (2019) considering his Jagame Thandhiram (2021) and Mahaan (2022) premiered directly on streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

'Jigarthanda DoubleX': Karthik Subbaraj opens up on his film's theatrical release after 'Petta', shares about working with filmmakers Raghava Lawrence and S J Suryah

Blockbuster Tamil filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj is returning to theatres after more than four years with his latest film, Jigarthanda DoubleX, starring Raghava Lawrence and S J Suryah, after the box-office money-spinner Petta (2019) with 'Superstar' Rajinikanth. With the upcoming period action comedy film set for a grand Diwali release on November 10, the hit director sat down for an exclusive interview with Galatta to talk about his films that were released on streaming platforms, while also explaining the working process and his experiences with Raghava Lawrence and S J Suryah.

Karthik Subbaraj, whose Jagame Thandhiram (2021) and Mahaan (2022) were released on OTT, explained his feelings about Jigarthanda DoubleX coming out in cinemas saying, "Petta was the last film of mine in theatres. The experience of Petta and the celebrations after its release were superb. I got to watch the film with the audience and 'Thalaivar' fans. I didn't think during those moments that the films I was doing next would be a theatrical release or not, but the situations were as such. I too feel this is a long gap and I'm very excited and keen to watch my film in the theatre."

Upon being queried about collaborating with Raghava Lawrence and S J Suryah in Jigarthanda DoubleX, who themselves are established filmmakers, and whether he had to compromise on any occasion, Karthik Subbaraj said, "They will accept. There will be occasions when they will accept immediately and other instances when they will discuss again and again. I too will explain what my requirements are and try to convince them. It's not like this happens on a daily basis, but there have been a few occasions when such discussions have taken place. And, I believe that's a good thing because when we are discussing an important scene or a shot, the focus is on how they will perform and how the output will turn out. During such a scenario, they will have a perspective. At one point, they will be easily convinced and when they aren't, I'll begin to feel tired. And, at that point, I'll tell them that the discussion is enough and that this is how we're going to do it. They never took it in the wrong way and nothing wrong happened either. It was a jolly [experience]."
