Nani's new film, Hi Nanna, also starring Mrunal Thakur under debutant Shouryuv's direction, is gearing up for a grand worldwide theatrical release on December 7. With only a few days left for the romantic family drama film to open in cinemas, the leading Telugu actor recently sat down for a candid conversation with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, and opened up on how Tamil filmmaker Mani Ratnam shaped his cinematic sensibilities. Nani starts off saying, "I'm a big cinema fan. I used to watch a lot of films on TV. I still remember there was this cable TV [channel] when I was in fifth class which started after Doordarshan and they used to put on a film every day. There was no need to wait till Sunday or anything, and it was too exciting for me. And, I've realized in any film... there were these huge hits from Telugu that they were putting on... And, I used to watch films and even when my friends were playing, I would like to sit in front of the TV and watch films. I used to enjoy and that's it. I never used to watch that same film again. I will want another option."

Nani further explained, "Somehow I realized that it started with Roja or Thalapathi, I think, it was the first film I saw of Mani Ratnam. I didn't know who the director was at that age, but I knew that something about those films of Mani sir made me want to watch them again and again. I don't know what exactly or what to call it. There were films that I loved as a kid. Once I enjoyed that film, I was not like, 'I want to watch it from beginning to end. I want to understand.' It didn't make me think much. It was entertaining me." He continued, "So, Mani sir's films always made me a little curious about cinema, what the director will think, and how he will think of a scene like this... I never thought in that direction. I was only getting entertained as an audience. So, why I always say it's Mani sir is because I think his films made me... I have always been an audience who loves cinema... I think he put that thought in my head to think about other things in cinema, which made me go into cinema and made me choose this path; choose cinema as a profession. Otherwise, I would have been a good audience watching a film every Friday. So, there's a big influence of Mani sir because I constantly watched his films not just as an audience, but also as I was very curious to understand and notice all the little details and nuances, and I started loving the process of filmmaking."

Telugu actor Nani's Dasara is gearing up for a massive theatrical release on March 30 and is billed to be an out-and-out intense action drama. The upcoming period action adventure film produced under the Sri Lakshmi Venkateswara Cinemas banner has been directed by debutant Srikanth Odela and also stars National Award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh as the female lead, with music composed by Santhosh Narayanan. With less than a week for its grand release in cinemas, Nani recently sat down with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, to talk about Dasara and how commercial cinema has evolved over the years.

Explaining what a theatre film is and how Dasara fits the bill, Nani states, "It's a film where there are moments, which you want to scream to or you want to root for that character. You want someone to join in your reaction. You won't do that if you're watching it alone. And also, I'm a big fan of commercial films, but in the last decade or so, at one point it became about having a few elements like looking colorful elements with no story. It's just back-to-back jokes, fights and songs." He added, "The commercial cinema I loved used to be something, which had this full story going on and relatable emotions where you cry and laugh along with them, and you'll also whistle when there's an action episode. So, that feeling of relation went away. There are so many films, but I obviously can't take names. At that point, I thought, we've lost that commercial factor and now there's a different meaning to it."

Nani continued, "I'm glad every year something new comes along. A good example for that is Vikram. It's a stylish and nicely made film. It's not trying to tell you, 'This is enough for you. You wanted a commercial cinema? So, take it!' No, it was a very well-made film. There's an interesting and unique screenplay. And, that also is a theatre film where you get all those highs. And, then RRR, which did very well everywhere because of its emotion because you feel for them (on the screen). And, there's KGF in Kannada and the visual film-making, which was next level. The editing style made us want to watch it on the big screen." He goes on to speak about Dasara saying, "It also has that strong element where in between those theatre moments, there's a strong story happening and the characters are normal people. It's not like every scene is without any logic. There are scenes that feel almost like very basic. The guy is very weak in a few scenes, very flawed, very normal, and not black or white. There's a moment when it will all come together and he will rise to the occasion. So, those kind of films are my kind of commercial cinema and I would love to see a film like that in the theatre." Upon being queried about Dasara being made with a possible sequel in mind, Nani replied, "No, no. Not really. I'm sure now, what happens is, if the audience makes it a huge blockbuster, I can't give a guarantee that there won't be a new thought happening in Srikanth's head. But, when we started off, it was never meant to be a (sequel)."

Jersey is an emotionally made tale that talks about an ageing cricketer who resurrects his career after failing to raise money to buy a cricket jersey for his son. Arjun - a former Ranji player who quit cricket at the age of 26, wishes to play for the Indian team at 36. Does he make it to the squad? This film certainly has a lot more to say than just about his struggles. Jersey stands unique in a lot of ways and as a reward the film won a lot of appreciation and also went on to be a commercial success at the box office. Jersey turn one year today and the fans of the film have been sharing posts about it since yesterday. Shraddha Srinath who played the female lead took to his social media space to share an emotional note about the film:  “I'm a hopeless romantic. A sucker for love stories. Unfinished love stories, or love that could not be - they break my heart and cause me physical pain. I can't explain it.
Shraddha Srinath talks disturbring college days travel experienceShraddha Srinath talks disturbring college days travel experience
I think about Arjun and Sarah a lot and how their story ended so abruptly. I do. A love story that started so beautifully. There was respect, there was unconditional support, there was abundant love, there was a fire to fight against the world for one another. And then years later... there comes reality and it's not pretty. She is frustrated, he feels lost and hopeless. Some days I just wish Sarah had not refused to give Arjun the money he needed. Other times I wish Arjun had not hidden from Sarah why he quit playing cricket to begin with. I wish Sarah had been more supportive, more kind and less flustered. I wish Arjun had realised that being alive to watch his son grow up is more important than absolutely everything else. But maybe I don't understand Sarah and Arjun at all. Maybe there were a victim of their circumstances, far more complex than you and I can comprehend. And so, I can only wish. Perhaps in a parallel universe Sarah and Arjun still live.

Perhaps, sometimes fiction becomes a part of our subconscious mind and thrives there and gets immortalised. One year since Jersey, I find myself absent mindedly thinking all this quite often. ðŸ˜Š This photo was taken by Nani when I was rehearsing feverishly for the confrontation scene. He took it without me realising, then later asked me to check my messages. So sweet no. @nameisnani , you were such an incredible co actor. So sensitive and such a joy to work with. Mere awards cannot do justice to the kind of effort you put in. You made it timeless. And @gowtamnaidu , thank you my friend, for everything. ❤️”
