Tamil comedian-actor 'Vaigai Puyal' Vadivelu extended his support to acclaimed filmmaker Mari Selvaraj on Thursday, December 21, for taking part in the Tirunelveli flood rescue efforts with Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development. The hit director, who has made films Pariyerum Perumal (2018), Karnan (2021), and Maamannan (2023), accompanied the sports minister over the past two days, for the rescue efforts after the Thamirabarani river flooded due to continuous rains for the last 2 days, along with the districts of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi (Tuticorin). Although both Udhayanidhi Stalin and Mari Selvaraj were seen working with the authorities to help those stranded in the floods, a section of the people also criticized them, with Vadivelu now addressing the issue during a public appearance in Chennai.

Speaking about Udhayanidhi Stalin and Mari Selvaraj's efforts during the Tirunelveli flood rescue operations, Vadivelu said, "Our government is facing several challenges today. There was a cyclone here in Chennai. That changed into a big political topic. Now, there are floods in the South. But, it couldn't be converted to a political topic because the water flow is huge. Those who are doing politics, why aren't they doing the same there? They can't. They're shouting and one among them is saying, 'Why is that director going there? What business does that director have with this?' It's his hometown. Only he knows where there are potholes and pits on the roads in his hometown. Shouldn't he go there? If not him, who else will go? He only will know who will be needing and seeking help."

Vadivelu continued, "Another person is saying something like, 'Why is Udhayanidhi Stalin going there?' Who is he? He's the person who should go there and let the people know that he's there for them, and is living amongst them. All the ministers, MLAs, and officials are struggling in the water and they all are working together based on the orders from the top. I'm not interested in talking politics. I'm not speaking politics. Everyone has a part in this. But, some are questioning him for going there. 'What job does he have there? Why is he going there?' Where has he come from? Did Mari Selvaraj come here from America? They're talking unnecessarily. I'm trying to maintain my composure. I'm not talking about anybody in particular." He further stated, "One person is asking, 'What does Udhayanidhi know?' A reporter queried him that the work wasn't progressing at a faster pace. He responded saying, 'Have I come here to do a tour of this place? We are doing our work.' After all, the work is being carried out. On that one day, when the rain was pouring heavily, not a single person was seen outside. How will anyone be able to do anything when there's so much water? Will I be able to go? Nobody can go there. They feel for the hardships that the people are experiencing. And, this government is carrying out the work wonderfully."

Vadivelu played the role of Udhayanidhi Stalin's father in Maamannan under Mari Selvaraj's direction released earlier this year, which also starred Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil and National Award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh, with the music composed by Academy Award winner A. R. Rahman. Watch Vadivelu's speech in the video below:

It was a big evening on November 30 when the biggest stars took over the celebrations at the Galatta Nakshatra Awards 2023. Among the leading names to have graced the star-studded gala event was youth sensation and actor Dhruv Vikram, who was honored with the 'Heartthrob of Tamil Cinema' award. Receiving the 'Heartthrob of Tamil Cinema' award at the Galatta Nakshatra Awards 2023 from blockbuster Tamil filmmaker Atlee, Dhruv expressed his gratitude to fans and started his speech by saying, "I want to thank you all for your support and your love as it motivates me. And, Galatta, I didn't expect such an award. It's very sweet. Thank you. I would also like to thank Atlee sir at this time because he's become a director who made the entire world look at us. And, to receive this award from him, is a motivation for an actor like me. This also reminds me that I need to work a lot more and I feel that you all must feel proud about me when you think about me. I'm ready to do anything to deserve this type of love. It's a big honor being here. Kundavai (Trisha Krishnan) is also here. I'm a big fan."

Dhruv Vikram also opened up about his upcoming project saying, "I'm doing a film next with Mari Selvaraj sir. I have been practicing Kabbadi for the last six months. It's a biopic based on a kabbadi player named Manathi Ganesan. I've been preparing for that and the film be released soon. I hope you all like it." Revealing that his father 'Chiyaan' Vikram was the one who told him that he was going to receive 'Heartthrob of Tamil Cinema' award, Dhruv stated, "I didn't expect to be chosen for this honor. I don't know whether I'm a heart-throb, but I wish to steal the hearts of the fans and the technicians who are here now. I wish to work even more."

With the Galatta Wonder Women Awards 2023 also taking place on the same evening at the Galatta Nakshatra Awards stage, Dhruv Vikram spoke about his mother Shailaja Balakrishnan, and his sister Akshita. He said, "Many people might think that we're a film family, but right from my childhood days, my mother, my sister, and myself have maintained a distance from the industry. I'm experiencing all this after coming to cinema. They are still enjoying it all from a distance. So, without their support, it wouldn't be possible for me to come here. I'm sure every man has women like them to motivate them. I want to thank my father and my mother for creating my heart."

The evening also had a special surprise in store for Dhruv Vikram as a photo frame featuring a painting of himself alongside his father Vikram was presented as a token of love and appreciation. The 'Heartthrob of Tamil Cinema' award winner also treated the fans to a special performance by singing the smash hit song 'Kanave Kanave' from his father's film, David (2013). Talking about his beloved father Vikram, Dhruv said, "He's the reason why I'm standing here. I'll need to do more work to carry forward the legacy of his name and I hope to one day make it as big as him." Upon being shown a meme in which he appears to be collaborating in the future with 'Thalapathy' Vijay's son Jason Sanjay directing their film, with Aditi Shankar playing the female lead, and Anirudh Ravichander composing the music, the Mahaan star said, "They're all family friends and I've known them since childhood. When we recently met, we didn't discuss cinema. But, if an opportunity like this comes my way, it will be nice and interesting."

'Galatta Plus Mega Tamil Roundtable 2023': Mari Selvaraj opens up on the problems he faced for the 'Karnan' police station fight scene, shares the Censor Board's reply (VIDEO)

Galatta Plus Mega Tamil Roundtable 2023 hosted recently by National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, saw notable Tamil filmmaking names come together for a discussion on mainstream and parallel cinema, and more, while drawing in on their own experiences. Among those who took part in the film discussion were eminent filmmakers Mani Ratnam, Vetri Maaran, Sudha Kongara, Madonne Ashwin, and PS Vinothraj, with Mari Selvaraj explaining the difficulties he faced during the censor process for his Karnan (2021) starring two-time National Award-winning actor Dhanush.

Speaking at the Galatta Plus Mega Tamil Roundtable 2023, Mari Selvaraj said, "When Karnan was sent to the Censor Board, they didn't allow me to keep the police station attack scene and told me to remove it. The characters in the scene were carrying only sticks and coconut tree stems. When I pointed out to them that there have been films that featured police stations and the Chief Minister's convoy cars getting destroyed in bomb blasts, they said, 'That isn't a mind changer. Those films don't change a person's state of mind. Similar to video games, the audience will celebrate them.' There was a big fight about this. The reason I'm telling this is to share this with Mani sir and everyone who is here. There were so many disagreements during the censoring of both of my films. My point was that everything in my film was handled truthfully with simplicity and on a certain level. If the character doesn't fight back, we said that it would create an alienation. But, I've faced problems during the censor process with all my films." He added, "When I say problems, they weren't allowing me to include what was previously permitted. A character attacking a policeman and getting a person out from inside the police station is something that has happened and continues to happen. It's moral rage. When there's an opportunity to show a bomb blast and not this, I feel hurt that they have allowed this big violence to be celebrated in theatres when I watch some films. It still cannot be broken. I don't know whether it's wrong."

Explaining that he didn't know how to talk to the Censor Board during the comparison of the fight scenes in other films with the one shot in Karnan, Mari Selvaraj said, "They will handle it just like that. We will not know how to react at the moment. Karnan had not yet been released. But, when the film went to the censors, they had listed 60 complaints and told me that a case had been filed against me. So, for reference, I submitted my ration card and voter ID, my family's ration cards and voter IDs, the ration cards and voter IDs of the people living in my street and my village, and the names and the blood relationship between us, and explained how these folklore names are a metaphor for all the communities and all the people and are common to all. I submitted all the relevant documents because I wanted this name, but they didn't allow it. The name didn't change the story and is an emotional aspect. When they didn't allow me, I was forced to come up with another name." He continued, "When I asked them if they allowed this before and how this would cause problems, the censor officers gave me a reply that they should not. They said, 'You will feel if we tell you. Since you're fighting so much, this name can come in other films and not in a Mari Selvaraj film.' So, when I was writing the script for Maamannan, this occupied my mind completely. Udhayandihi Stalin sir came in and I knew I was going to do a political drama. When I'm writing a script, I'm getting nervous. I shouldn't watch other films because there will be everything in them. They will be celebrated, but the changes and the depression they bring in us, we don't know. But, when we decide that we have to do this story and this film, we will have to keep developing bit by bit. Usually, we show the hero whether the dialogue is okay, and all the other people, and finally the censors, and they will then say something. And, this is where I called something I learned from Vetri Maaran sir - 'The script will keep changing during the shooting.' "

Galatta Plus Mega Tamil Roundtable 2023, a celebration of talent in Tamil cinema, was recently hosted by National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, with esteemed filmmakers Mani Ratnam, Vetri Maaran, Sudha Kongara, Mari Selvaraj, Madonne Ashwin, and P.S. Vinothraj sharing their experiences in their filmmaking endeavors over the years.  During the special discussion about their films, directors Sudha Kongara and Mari Selvaraj debated the reaction to Vetri Maaran's Asuran (2019), while also talking about the reason for its stupendous success.

Speaking about Asuran at the Galatta Plus Mega Tamil Roundtable 2023, Sudha Kongara said, "I remember vividly how someone I know watched the film during the dubbing stages and said that there are no chances it will run because of the violence depicted. But, he (Vetri Maaran) kept his voice intact and with that voice, you're giving a success. He (Mani Ratnam) has been doing that for forty years. We are fighting about this only now. This has been the case with Mani sir's every film." Mari Selvaraj then chimed in saying, "Asuran became a hit with its trailer itself. The dialogue in it made it a hit. The violence you're referring to was only later on. The dialogue about how the money and land will be seized, but not one's education, made Asuran a success. Irrespective of how much the violence gets shown, this film has registered its message."

Sudha Kongara further stated, "I like that aspect. I too would be crying about how little my salary is and the budget for my film, but in actuality, I have sat down and thought about how I cannot make a film like that. In fact, the film that he (PS Vinothraj) made (Koozhangal), I cannot make. I love it, but I can't do it since it's not my voice. So, in such a situation, in the mainstream, you're doing a different cinema and it's a great achievement."
