Blockbuster Tamil filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon's Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha starring Varun and Raahei is out in theatres now after a long wait. The hit director recently sat down for an exclusive podcast interview with Galatta to talk about the action thriller film, while also opening up about his Tamil cinema journey. During the podcast, GVM goes on to explain his style of making contemporary love stories, while also addressing National Award-winning filmmaker Vetri Maaran's claims about being able to doing only period love stories.

Speaking about making love stories that hit a chord with the current generation, Gautham Menon said, "I think they will connect with us. I feel Vetri's wrong. If he makes that period love story, people will really connect with it. So, he doesn't have to make a contemporary love story. Let him make a period love story only." Addressing Vetri Maaran's confidence in doing a period love story, he asserted, "That is a contemporary love story today. The period love story he does, people will connect with."

Gautham Menon then goes on to refer Pradeep Ranganthan's Love Today (2022) and how it's a contemporary love story, but is not today's love story categorically speaking. He said, "I'm not saying Love Today is that contemporary love story. I liked it. It was fun. It was a good watch and all that stuff, but I don't think that is today's love story. That is just a perspective about two people and a phone. But, I think today there's a lot more going on, which is a study by itself. Like if I ask my son the way he talks to a girl and the way he'll handle his girlfriend is completely different from how I would have probably handled it. They're very practical about it. If we crack that, they'll connect with it."

Blockbuster Tamil filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon's latest film, Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha, starring Varun and Raahei in the lead roles has released in theatres starting today, March 1, after a long wait. The celebrated director has now in an exclusive podcast interview with Galatta spoken about the film, while also sharing about his journey in Tamil cinema. GVM goes on to speak about what prompted him to choose filmmaking as a career and what other profession he would have pursued had he not become a director.

Speaking about what made him decide to become a film director, Gautham Menon said, "This is what defines me and I realized this when I was 16. After watching a film, I had a longing in me and felt that I should do this. I don't know what else I would have done had it not been for this. A question popped up in my mind whether the work we do only defines us and if there's nothing more beyond that. There are many things within us like another world, family, traveling, books, the films we watch, the various people we meet, but I feel that this is what defines me. When I'm at my home, in some way, these thoughts and ideas, when I think about writing, when I watch a film and get inspired, or when the people around us share with us something beautiful, it brings up a thought about including it in my work. So, I think this defines me and I could have done so many other things, but I don't know whether I would have been the same me had I followed those paths."

Gautham Menon further stated, "You may ask what else if not this. Maybe I would have been a house husband who would stay home and look after his kids. I would just love to cook and be there, and take care of people. I love to do that. When everybody is eating, I like to serve. I like to be in the kitchen. I like to cook. I like to clean vessels. I like to do all that. I'm not saying this as some big thing, but I like that. So, I would have loved to just stay at one place and take care of everyone. I could have done that. Or, my life would have gone down the path of becoming a cricketer and I could have pushed myself a little more and pursued it. I played back in school and college, and maybe if I pushed myself a bit more, I could have become a bowler. It's not important the heights we reach, but I could have done that. I don't know how much that would have defined me and whether it would have given me a sense of satisfaction, a complete comfort and happiness. But, this has given me that irrespective of the problems, and this is there in anybody's journey."

Explaining his passion for filmmaking, Gautham Menon added, "No matter what we do, there will always be an obstacle or a push back, and we might look and wonder how a year went by. But, beyond that, I'm always looking forward to talking to you or to anybody regarding a film. I honestly say this that I don't think about why I should talk after completing a film. There are various ways to promote films. After giving 7-8 interviews, I believe that there's no need to speak from our hearts. Putting up posters alone is enough. I look forward to this, I love what I'm doing, and that's why I'm talking to you, and that defines me."

'Dhruva Natchathiram': Gautham Menon explains the big differences in the 'Chiyaan' Vikram film after he first narrated the story to Suriya and 'Superstar' Rajinikanth (EXCLUSIVE)

Blockbuster Tamil filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon's Dhruva Natchathiram starring National Award-winning Tamil actor 'Chiyaan' Vikram with music composed by Harris Jayaraj is gearing up for a grand worldwide theatrical release on November 24 and the excitement for the highly-anticipated film is as big as it gets. The espionage thriller includes an ensemble star cast featuring the likes of Ritu Varma as the female lead, with Radhakrishnan Parthiban, R Radikaa Sarathkumar, Simran, Divya Dharshini, Munna Simon, Vamsi Krishna, Salim Baig, Sathish Krishnan, and Maya S Krishnan appearing in key roles. With Vikram's Dhruva Natchathiram continuing to be the talk of the town despite several release delays over the years, Gautham Menon sat down with Galatta recently to share his journey, while also opening up about the differences in the versions of the story he had initially narrated to Suriya and 'Superstar' Rajinikanth.

Explaining his initial approach to the Dhruva Natchathiram, Gautham Menon said, "I'm happy that stories like these are still relevant today. It's the same script and no changes have been made. When I narrated the story to Suriya first, there was an emotional flashback. It would revolve around the character's younger version, an eighteen or twenty-year-old, the protagonist's past, and where he's coming from. If he didn't carry his baggage, he wouldn't have joined this team. The senior person who sets up this team, what he says is, 'I need people with regrets. Some people like me and many who are living with regrets, I think they are the ones who should come into this team. They only will be able to take this journey forward.' So, there was a flashback for that, but we didn't shoot that in this film. I've left a loose end and if this film does well, I'll show that flashback in the next; this character's backstory. Otherwise, what I wanted to shoot, I've shot."

Gautham Menon then spoke about his narration of the Dhruva Natchathiram story to 'Superstar' Rajinikanth. He said, "I don't know whether you know about this, but I told this story to Suriya first and it didn't work out. We had a good, healthy discussion, but it didn't work out. I then narrated this story to Rajini sir. So, when it went from Suriya to Rajini sir, I met him after making changes for him such as the emotional flashback was not there, obviously. There were no love portions. Ritu would not have been there in this film actually. But, when I came back to Vikram, I decided to show a relationship between a man in his forties and a girl - a love, a romance, a friendship, you can call it whatever, I felt that should be there, and that's how she came into the film."
