One of the biggest films in its early stages of development, Maanaadu, starring STR in the lead role will be directed by Venkat Prabhu and under Suresh Kamatchi’s V House Productions banner.
Touted to be a political entertainer, Simbu’s Maanaadu is set to begin filming next month with Kalyani Priyadarshan playing the role of the female lead. As of now, no other cast members have been revealed to be part of the film with the technical crew also expected to be revealed in the days ahead.
Meanwhile, there have been reports stating iconic six-time National Award-winning filmmaker Bharathiraja has been roped in by the Maanaadu team to play the antagonist in the film.
That said, we here at Galatta had gotten in touch with producer Suresh Kamatchi to clarify the news who revealed that the Padmashri recipient is indeed a part of Maanaadu, but he will not be playing the antagonist as being stated across other media. He went on to quote saying, "Yes, Bharathiraja is going to be in Maanaadu, but he is not playing the villain."
The veteran director turned actor had impressed one and all with a thunderous performance as a villain in Mani Ratnam's 2004 cult classic, Aaytha Ezhuthu, and will be next seen in an important supporting role in the upcoming Sasikumar starrer, Kennedy Club.
Expectations surrounding Maanaadu are quite high considering it marks the first time STR will be working as a hero in a Venkat Prabhu film after he appeared in a cameo in the hit 2009 comedy entertainer, Goa.

Bala's reply to Bharathiraja
By Ambili S | Galatta | 08:18 PM
Two maverick directors Bala and Bharathiraja are involved in a verbal spat over the story of Kuttraparambarai, a story set in the pre-independence era that narrates about the lives of a fading tribal community who are professional thieves. Ace writer and Bharathiraja's close associate Rathnakumar and writer-turned-actor Vela Ramamoorthy claim that Kuttra Parambarai is their story. In an interview to a leading daily, Rathnakumar revealed that they have already approached Sivaji and Sarathkumar to play the lead role, however, due to Sivaji's ill health the shooting was stalled. Director Bharathiraja has also kickstarted the project officially in Usilampatti recently.
Now its Bala's turn, in a press meet, the Avan Ivan director clarified his stand on the issue. He said that his story is totally different from Kuttraparambarai and he is only taking a branch from Vela Ramamurthy's Kootanchoru. "I am warning Bharathiraja and Rathnakumar to refrain from using my name," he added. He further said that Kuttraparambarai is history and no one can claim ownership for it. When asked about Bharathiraja's comments on casting other language actors (Arya, Vishal) in the film, Bala said, "Cinema is a world language and to differentiate cinema on the basis of linguistic, religion or geography is a disgusting thought."
Bala also confirmed that he will be going ahead with the project and it will not be based on any story. It would rather base on his take on the history (an adaptation of a branch-story from Kootanchoru by Vela Ramamurthy).
