Tamil comedian-actor 'Vaigai Puyal' Vadivelu extended his support to acclaimed filmmaker Mari Selvaraj on Thursday, December 21, for taking part in the Tirunelveli flood rescue efforts with Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development. The hit director, who has made films Pariyerum Perumal (2018), Karnan (2021), and Maamannan (2023), accompanied the sports minister over the past two days, for the rescue efforts after the Thamirabarani river flooded due to continuous rains for the last 2 days, along with the districts of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi (Tuticorin). Although both Udhayanidhi Stalin and Mari Selvaraj were seen working with the authorities to help those stranded in the floods, a section of the people also criticized them, with Vadivelu now addressing the issue during a public appearance in Chennai.

Speaking about Udhayanidhi Stalin and Mari Selvaraj's efforts during the Tirunelveli flood rescue operations, Vadivelu said, "Our government is facing several challenges today. There was a cyclone here in Chennai. That changed into a big political topic. Now, there are floods in the South. But, it couldn't be converted to a political topic because the water flow is huge. Those who are doing politics, why aren't they doing the same there? They can't. They're shouting and one among them is saying, 'Why is that director going there? What business does that director have with this?' It's his hometown. Only he knows where there are potholes and pits on the roads in his hometown. Shouldn't he go there? If not him, who else will go? He only will know who will be needing and seeking help."

Vadivelu continued, "Another person is saying something like, 'Why is Udhayanidhi Stalin going there?' Who is he? He's the person who should go there and let the people know that he's there for them, and is living amongst them. All the ministers, MLAs, and officials are struggling in the water and they all are working together based on the orders from the top. I'm not interested in talking politics. I'm not speaking politics. Everyone has a part in this. But, some are questioning him for going there. 'What job does he have there? Why is he going there?' Where has he come from? Did Mari Selvaraj come here from America? They're talking unnecessarily. I'm trying to maintain my composure. I'm not talking about anybody in particular." He further stated, "One person is asking, 'What does Udhayanidhi know?' A reporter queried him that the work wasn't progressing at a faster pace. He responded saying, 'Have I come here to do a tour of this place? We are doing our work.' After all, the work is being carried out. On that one day, when the rain was pouring heavily, not a single person was seen outside. How will anyone be able to do anything when there's so much water? Will I be able to go? Nobody can go there. They feel for the hardships that the people are experiencing. And, this government is carrying out the work wonderfully."

Vadivelu played the role of Udhayanidhi Stalin's father in Maamannan under Mari Selvaraj's direction released earlier this year, which also starred Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil and National Award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh, with the music composed by Academy Award winner A. R. Rahman. Watch Vadivelu's speech in the video below:

'Thalapathy' Vijay's Leo is all set for a grand opening in cinemas worldwide on Thursday, October 19, and the wait is all set to come to an end for fans to witness the Tamil superstar on the big screen once again after the blockbuster, Varisu, released earlier this year for Pongal. In that light, the highly-anticipated mass action drama directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj was watched by actor and Tamil Nadu politician Udhayanidhi Stalin, who extended his wishes to the film's team, while sharing his review on X on Wednesday. In his post, the Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development gave a triple thumbs up to Vijay for his performance in Leo, while complimenting Lokesh Kanagaraj for his excellent filmmaking, composer Anirudh Ravichander for his work on the musical front, and the National Award-winning stunt choreographer duo Anbaraiv for their skills in the action department.

Udhayanidhi Stalin's praise, however, didn't stop with appreciating the Leo team as he also dropped a big hint about the highly-anticipated film being a part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). In his review, he went on to add the hashtag #LCU along with a winking face emoji immediately leading to the speculation that the film is a part of the franchise, which was first referenced after it was revealed that the events of Karthi's Kaithi (2019) and Kamal Haasan's Vikram (2022) are set in the same universe. For more than a year now, there has been a huge chatter about whether Vijay's Leo is also set in the same universe, and Udhayanidhi Stalin's latest statement has set off tremendous excitement among the fans ahead of the film's worldwide release tomorrow.

Leo is the second time Vijay, Lokesh Kanagaraj, and Anirudh Ravichander have collaborated after their blockbuster, Master (2021). The upcoming film also includes an ensemble star cast featuring some of the biggest names in Tamil and Indian cinema among whom include Trisha playing the female lead, with Sanjay Dutt, Arjun, Mysskin, and Sandy master set to be seen in negative roles, while Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mansoor Ali Khan, Priya Anand, and Mathew Thomas will be making appearances.

Udhayanidhi Stalin will be signing off from acting with Maamannan directed by Mari Selvaraj, which is set for a grand opening in theatres worldwide on June 29. The upcoming film also stars comedy legend 'Vaigai Puyal' Vadivelu, National Award winners Keerthy Suresh and Fahadh Faasil, and will feature music by Academy Award-winning composer A. R. Rahman. With less than a week left for Maamannan's release, Udhayanidhi Stalin along with Vadivelu, Mari Selvaraj, and Keerthy Suresh sat down with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, to talk about why he wanted to do the film.

Speaking about his interest to collaborate with Mari Selvaraj, Udhayanidhi Stalin said, "I watched Pariyerum Perumal and we spoke for a long time. During our conversation, I asked him if we can do a film. But, he said he had a lot of other commitments. Again, after watching Karnan, we were talking for a long time. I kept insisting that we do a film. It was at this time that I made a decision about my last cinema outing and how I wanted it to be a hard-hitting film. I like his style of filmmaking. I like the message he conveys in his films. I liked each and every shot in Karnan. I had also tweeted at the time about how a director was able to make other creatures act. Be it a horse or a donkey and even a fish, he made them act. I was firm that I should do a film with a director like him."

Regarding why he wanted Mari Selvaraj to be the director of his last film, Udhayanidhi said, "I told him that I'm going to do my last film and I want you to direct it. But, he narrated the story of this film (Maamannan) believing I would not accept it. Initially, I was terrified whether the audience will accept me if I did this role. Later, I decided to take a leap of faith and told him that I believed in him, his cinema, and his political knowledge. After that, when the others started coming onboard the film, its canvas became bigger. Vadivelu sir was needed for that pivotal character. Fahadh then came in, followed by Keerthy and then A. R. Rahman sir joined the film."

Udhayanidhi continued, "I used to go and ask him (Mari Selvaraj) after we shot every scene what he was trying to convey. There was no dialogue paper. He would explain only after we went to the shooting. During that time, the assistant director would sit down and write, and it would be made as a scene. He will ask us to perform and he'll push it to scrap if he doesn't like what's been done. He'll then give suggestions on doing something else next. It was very challenging to work in his way of filmmaking. If I asked him whether I can say a specific dialogue in a certain manner, he would tell me that it would end up conveying a different meaning. As a writer, he has that understanding. I didn't do this film for political mileage, but I rather wished to be a part of his film world. Or else, I would have told him to change some scenes and there are options for those alterations in the story too, but, I didn't interrupt him anywhere. We asked him to be true to the story and told him that we'll stand beside him."

Maamannan is the next big project of Udhayanidhi Stalin that also has veteran actor ‘Vaigai Puyal' Vadivelu in an important role. It is helmed by director Mari Selvaraj and also has music composed by A.R. Rahman. Ahead of the release of the film, Udhayanidhi Stalin gave an exclusive interview with Galatta Media and shared some exacting details about the project. When asked if he felt insecure at any time, the actor said he was afraid before they began shooting.

Udhayanidhi Stalin then revealed how the huge cast came together and said the director Mari Selvaraj told him the story and said 'Vaigai Puyal' Vadivelu would be perfect for the father role. He said “Nobody would have thought about it because it's been a long time since he (Vadivelu) had done a role like this. I thought we will ask him and I called Vadivelu's brother and he was sigining in comedy films at that time. I asked him to watch Pariyerum Perumal and Karan”. The actor said that he convinced Vadivelu that this could be his  last film and asked him to hear the story. The actor then said Vadivelu replies to him and asked if he heard the story and said “if you are ok with the story then I am ok". Then, he said that "Mari sir said Fahad Faasil would be nice if he did the opposite role". Udhayanidhi Stalin revealed that the Malayalam actor agreed without hearing the story.

Udhayanidhi Stalin explained that Mari Selvaraj's choice of music composer was Santhosh Narayanan but they roped in A.R. Rahman because the actor wanted to work with the composer for at least one film. He said “I first introduced them in a Zoom call during lockdown and told him it's my last film". He said himself and Keerthy Suresh wanted to do a film for a long time and she agreed immediately because of the director. He further said “Every character will have equal importance."
