The DD Returns actor added said, "They said to me in the walkie-talkie to do a comedy; they said it was a comedy scene, and they do not have road permission and I had to do it immediately. He was alone on the road and did not know how to perform the comedy there. Blockbuster Tamil filmmaker AR Murugadoss has produced films like Engaeyum Eppothum, Raja Rani, Maan Karate, 10 Endrathukulla, Rangoon to name a notable few, and is set to present his next, August 16, 1947, which has been directed by his former associate NS Ponkumar. The upcoming period action drama film scheduled to release on April 7 had its audio launch at Sathyam Cinemas on Monday evening, which witnessed several big names grace the occasion, including Sivakarthikeyan. During his speech at the August 16, 1947 audio launch, Murugadoss turned emotional at a moment while describing the sets of the film, and how he was reminded of the late art director T. Santhanam with whom he collaborated in 'Thalapathy' Vijay's Sarkar (2018) and Darbar with 'Superstar' Rajinikanth (2020). 

During his speech , AR Murugadoss turned emotional while speaking about the sets created for August 16, 1947 and T. Santhanam's hard work. He said, "The only big factor missing is art director Santhanam, who left us all. His loss is something I'm able to come to terms with. We worked in Sarkar and Darbar. He worked on this film for me for less salary since it's a small budget venture. He created an entire village in an abandoned land on the outskirts and he sent a photograph of the sets. When I saw the picture, I told him that all the huts look similar and should appear different. One hut must look like it was created two years back, another one 5 years back and so on. I then took a car the next day and went to the sets. As soon as I arrived, I was stunned at how he changed everything in those 24 hours. You are witness to that transformation that you just watched in some of the visuals. He did a fantastic job and told me to send this to all the award ceremonies. His family has come here today. He could have been here with us for his children."

In tragic news, popular Tamil film art director T. Santhanam, who became famous after his work in the 2010 cult classic Aayirathil Oruvan, has passed away. He was 50. According to reports, Santhanam died due to cardiac arrest on the night of Sunday, October 23. The news of the art director's sudden passing has left many in the film industry in a state of grief, with fans as well expressing their heartfelt condolences on social media. Acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Vasanthabalan was one among those in the film fraternity to pay his tributes in a heartfelt post on his Facebook page and shared his working experience with Santhanam during the filming of Kaaviya Thalaivan in 2014. He also shared a photo featuring them both, which was taken right after the late art director had won the Tamil Nadu State Award for his work in Kaaviya Thalaivan. 

After working under Selvaraghavan's direction in Aayirathil Oruvan, which starred Karthi, Reema Sen, and Andrea Jeremiah in the lead roles, and featured chart-buster music by G. V. Prakash Kumar, T. Santhanam's next big film was Deiva Thirumagal featuring 'Chiyaan' Vikram, Sara Arjun, Anushka Shetty, and Amala Paul, and was helmed by A. L. Vijay in 2011. The film turned out to be a massive critical and commercial success, with the entire technical team garnering praise, including Santhanam's work in the art direction department. He followed it up with commendable work in Sudha Kongara's hit Irudhi Suttru in 2016, which had Madhavan and Ritika Singh in the lead roles, with the film turning out to be yet another critical success, and Santhanam earning appreciation for his skills yet again. 

T. Santhanam's career took flight soon after when he landed big gigs in ventures namely the 2018 box office blockbuster, Sarkar, starring 'Thalapathy' Vijay and Keerthy Suresh under A. R. Murugadoss' direction. Produced by Sun Pictures, the film went on to become a massive commercial success and one of the highest-grossing ventures in Vijay's career. Santhanam's next biggie was the 'Superstar' Rajinikanth and Nayanthara-starrer Darbar in 2020, which once again reunited him with filmmaker A. R. Murugadoss, and expected the film turned out to be a huge money-spinner at the box office. There was no stopping the hit art director thereafter as he signed up for Karthik Subbaraj's Jagame Thandhiram starring Dhanush and Mahaan, which saw the father-son duo 'Chiyaan' Vikram and Dhruv Vikram share screen space for the first time. T Santhanam's next big film is the upcoming period action drama, August 16, 1947, directed by NS Ponkumar under the AR Murugadoss Productions banner and stars Gautham Karthik in the lead role. 

The Arya-Santhanam duo has been a beloved on-screen combo and delighted audiences last in 2015's Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga, while also sharing screen space in films like Oru Kalluriyin Kathai, Chikku Bukku, Boss Engira Bhaskaran, Settai, and Raja Rani. Among the films, they have starred in together, 2010's Boss Engira Bhaskaran, directed by M. Rajesh and also starring Nayanthara, went on to become a massive box office success and continues to be remembered for its comedy and the on-screen camaraderie between the two stars. That being said, Arya, who will next be seen in the much-awaited sci-fi action thriller Captain releasing in theatres on September 8, met the press along with the film's other cast and crew members, with Santhanam as a guest of honor, who spoke about his interest in doing a sequel to Boss Engira Bhaskaran.

Speaking at the Captain press meet, Santhanam said, "Ever since I started taking up hero roles, I have been offered double-hero subjects, and many have called me to do guest roles too. I haven't done any such roles. I'm walking on a track of my own. But, I often say one thing to Arya - if you ever do Boss Engira Baskaran 2, I will come and act alongside you. I say this because that's the friendship we share and he's a true friend. Even when I was a comedian, Arya would encourage me to take up exercising, cycling, swimming, and so on. No matter what you do, you must be like a hero, he’d be telling me." 

Santhanam, who was recently seen in Gulu Gulu, further added, "In Boss Engira Baskaran, he gave me a full-length screen space and my love and encouragement for anything he does will always be there. I request everyone to go watch his new film in theatres as Arya is involved as a producer and is a story about aliens. I used to tell him when we were doing Boss Engira Baskaran that the amount of exercise he does and the physique he has built should be utilized well and that he should appear like Arnold (Schwarzenegger) with a gun and shoot, but instead, you're doing comedy with me here in Kumbakonam. My wishes to the entire team of Captain as they've not done a film about the military and the army going after terrorists, but instead tackling aliens, which is a new concept." 

Being distributed by Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies banner, Captain directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan of Miruthan and Tik Tik Tik fame is the second time the filmmaker has collaborated with Arya after last year's Teddy and also stars Aishwarya Lekshmi as the female lead, followed by Simran, Kavya Shetty, Thyagarajan, Harish Uthaman, Gokul, and Bharath Raj in supporting roles, and features music by D. Imman. The film is produced by Arya's The Show People in association with Think Studios and is a -sci-fi action adventure revolving around humans encountering creatures of a new species.

Santhanam's Gulu Gulu is one of the releases of this week and the film has got a good level of buzz on social media. The film is directed by Rathna Kumar who is known for directing films like Meyaadha Maan and Aadai. Interestingly, he was the dialogue writer of Lokesh Kanagaraj's two blockbuster hit films - Master with Thalapathy Vijay and Vikram with Kamal Haasan. Scheduled to hit the screens on July 29, the film will have a wide release through the banner of Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies. Ahead of the film's release, the makers have now officially released a new scene from the film as a sneak peek.

The scene looks intense and serious and stands out from the usual Santhanam films. One would tend to expect comedies to be on high quotient, but Gulu Gulu seems to be an interesting change. Santhanam doesn't utter any counter dialogues which have always been his forte but it is exciting to see him in a different dimension. The sneak peek garners our attention and it looks like director Rathna Kumar has got an interesting project on hand. Produced by Raj Narayanan under the banner of Circle Box Entertainment, the film has music composed by Santhosh Narayanan whose 'Maatna Gaali' song has become a rage among the youth audience.

Gulu Gulu has cinematography handled by Vijay Kartik Kannan of Doctor fame, while Philomin Raj has edited the film. Apart from Santhanam, the film features several other actors in supporting roles and it includes the likes of Athulya, Namitha, Pradeep Rawat, Mariyam George, Sai Dheena, 'Lollu Sabha' Maaran, 'Lollu Sabha' Seshu, TSR, Bipin, Mahanathi Shankar, Vichu, Kavi, Harish, Yuvaraj, Introduce 'Mauri Dass', Kaka Gopalm Billy Murali, Sivakumar, Yogiram, and others.
