Mani Ratnam's latest statement about shooting Ponniyin Selvan in the post-Corona world!
By Arvind Sundaram | Galatta | 04:00 PM
Director Mani Ratnam is currently making his dream project, Ponniyin Selvan, the historical epic film, that features an ensemble star cast including Chiyaan Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prabhu, Jayaram, Sarath Kumar, Vikram Prabhu, Ashwin Kakamanu, and others. The film’s production has been stalled temporarily due to the worldwide pandemic situation and it looks like there are going to be quite a lot of changes in how the film is going to be shot in the post-Corona world. In a recent webinar session, Mani Ratnam, shared a few words about the project and how he would have to adapt to the changes.
He said, “I am in the middle of a film based on the 10th century and I have a lot of sequences which require crowd. I have war sequences which need a lot of effort and crowd. I don't know how I am going to do that, but I know for sure I will do it. We’ll have to find ways with these restrictions and look to open up. Luckily for us, the technology has improved. There is so much in terms of computer graphics. We have to find different ways. But what we possibly require is a little bit of help to cope up.
The fact is that the theatrical release is going to be difficult and the market is going to get eroded which means that I have to make sure that the cost of my film is brought down to make it viable which means people involved in it, especially big stars and bigger technicians will have to understand and help to reduce their costs, making sure that the film industry is afloat.” When Mani Ratnam was asked if the new release date has been fixed for Ponniyin Selvan, he replied, “Right now, we are looking at the starting date of the reshooting. So we won't mark the release date at this point of time without knowing when we can recommence.”
Going by what Mani Ratnam says, it looks like Ponniyin Selvan’s production plans will see quite a few changes. The film has got huge expectations among the fans and it is going to be interesting to see how the maverick filmmaker has filmed the historical classic novel. Check out the webinar video below:
