Tamil Nadu government on Monday issued a media bulletin in regard to the state's response to combating the COVID-19 outbreak. In the latest data released, 5,967 fresh positive cases were recorded on August 24 taking the total number of cases in the state to 3,85,352. The total number of active coronavirus cases across the state including those in isolation as on today is 53,282.

There were 1,278 new coronavirus positive cases reported in Chennai taking the district's total to 1,26,677 cases. The district has been witnessing the number of fresh cases going past the 1200 mark over the past four days as there had been a consistent drop and a sudden short spike before. The city remains the worst-affected in the state with 13,255 active cases while Thiruvallur, Cuddalore and Coimbatore districts are following suit with more than 3,000 active cases.

97 people died on Monday across Tamil Nadu due to COVID-19 taking the state's death toll up to 6,614 casualties. Today is the second consecutive day the state has recorded 97 COVID-19-related deaths and is once again a slight rise in the toll compared to Saturday when 80 casualties were reported. Meanwhile, the recovery count keeps progressing forward at a steady pace as 6,129 patients got discharged over the past 24 hours, with the total going up to 3,25,456. 

Tamil Nadu is continuing to carry out the highest number of tests in the country as the state today tested 70,023 samples, while the overall count has gone up to 42,76,640. Likewise, the number of persons tested today are 67,980, with the total in the state going up to 41,31,604.
