Tamil Nadu government issued a news bulletin on Saturday addressing the state's combat against the novel coronavirus, with the latest data released showing 5,870 fresh positive cases getting recorded on September 5, taking the total number of cases to 4,57,697. The total number of active coronavirus cases across the state including those in isolation as on today is 51,583.

Chennai recorded 965 new coronavirus positive cases taking the district's total to 1,40,685 cases. This is a tremendous improvement for the city and is the first occasion in perhaps months that the case count has gone down below the 1,000 mark as 1,000 to 1,300 persons were testing positive for the disease on a daily basis. At present, Chennai city alone has 11,412 active cases with people currently undergoing treatment under home quarantine, while Coimbatore, Cuddalore and Salem witnessed a jump with 4,729, 3,753 and 3,498 active cases respectively. 

61 people died on Saturday across Tamil Nadu due to COVID-19 taking the state's death toll up to 7,748 casualties. Today's death toll in the state is significantly less compared to what was being recorded over the past few months, as the casualty count on an everyday basis has been for some time anywhere between 80 and 110 persons. Meanwhile, the recovery count in the state continues to get better as the past 24 hours witnessed 5,859 patients discharged after treatment taking the total to 3,98,366. 

The total number of samples tested across in Tamil Nadu today are 81,793, while the overall count currently stands at 52,12,534. Likewise, the number of persons tested today are 79,840 with the total in the state going up to 50,42,947. Tamil Nadu continues to lead in the number of tests being carried across the country on a daily basis as the state has now conducted 5.1 million tests to date.
