Tamil Nadu government issued a new update on Thursday regarding the state's response in tackling the COVID-19 outbreak, which has claimed the lives of millions worldwide. In their latest media bulletin, 4,231 new positive COVID-19 infection cases were recorded on July 9 taking the total number of cases in the state to 1,26,581. This is the first time after three straight days that TN has crossed the 4,000 cases barrier in the state. The total number of active cases across the state as on today is 46,652.

Chennai has been the hub for the most number of coronavirus cases in the state with the district continuing to remain the worst affected as 1,216 new cases were recorded today taking the district's overall count to 73,728 cases. However, it is to be noted that Chennai district on the whole has made big improvements in terms of the number of cases coming down as the past three days have recorded less than 1,300 cases and is no doubt a good news for the city. At present, Chennai city alone has 20,271 active cases. 

TN government also revealed that 65 people passed away due to the coronavirus on Thursday with the state's death toll shooting up to 1,765. Among the 65 who passed away today, 43 people died in government hospitals while 22 breathed their last in private medical facilities. Meanwhile, the past 24 hours have shown a vast improvement in the number of people who have made a recovery with 3,394 patients getting discharged taking the total number of recoveries to 78,161. The recovery rate for the state is currently at 61.75%. 

The total number of samples tested across the state today are 42,369 while the overall count has been announced to be 14,91,783. Likewise, the number of persons tested today are 41,038 with the total in the state going up to 14,28,360. Tamil Nadu currently has 100 functioning COVID-19 testing facilties among which 53 are state-run while 47 are private medical institutions.
