Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday issued a statement to the press detailing the developments regarding the state's response to the coronavirus pandemic. In their latest media bulletin, it has been revealed that 2,174 new positive COVID-19 infection cases were recorded on June 17 taking the total number of cases in the state to 50,193. Tamil Nadu is now the second state in the country to cross the 50,000 coronavirus cases mark after Maharashtra, which has registered over 1 lakh cases to date. With the state's COVID-19 infection count rising to 50,000 cases, Chennai continues to remain the worst affected with 1,276 new cases recorded today taking the district's overall count to 35,556 cases. 

TN government has also today tested the highest number of samples - 25,463 - and is the reason for the single largest case count for the state to date. The total number of samples tested in the state has risen to 773,707. The day has also witnessed 48 people passing away due to the coronavirus with the state's death toll shooting up to 576. Meanwhile, the past 24 hours have also seen a commendable improvement in the number of people who have recovered with 842 patients getting discharged taking the total number of people recuperating from the infection to 27,624.
