A 20-year-old woman, who tested positive for the novel coronavirus, died in the Government Vellore Medical College and Hospital (GVCMH) on Saturday after giving birth to a premature and stillborn baby. The woman was living at her in-laws place at Balaji Nagar in Pernambut in Vellore with her husband and had been married for a year. The young woman, who was seven months pregnant, had often visited the Government Hospital near her residence for her regular health check-ups. However, on Monday morning, she had fallen unconscious after which she was rushed to the GVMCH, where it was revealed that she was suffering from pregnancy-induced hypertension.

The doctors at the hospital arrived at a decision to perform a C-Section surgery after which she had given birth to a stillborn baby. By Friday, the woman began bleeding and her health started to deteriorate after which she was put on a ventilator. Subsequently, her blood samples were submitted for COVID-19 testing with results on Saturday morning revealing she had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The woman, however, today, died due to pregnancy-induced hypertension, with her tests revealing she was asymptomatic and was probably in the beginning stages of being infected by the infection with its source yet to be identified. Soon after the C-Section surgery was performed, the four doctors, 12 healthcare workers and eight nurses were given instructions to quarantine themselves with their swab samples sent for testing, while the hospital has since been disinfected.
