The last time actors Vijay, Ajith and Suriya battled it out at the box office was in 2003.

Vijay’s Thirumalai came out as a Diwali release in 2003, which then went on to become a blockbuster and set up an action superstar image for the 'Thalapathy'.

Director Bala’s Pithamagan released on the same festive occasion starred Suriya and Vikram and, went on to become a cult film winning the critics and audiences alike.

Although Ajith’s Anjaneya didn’t go on to perform well at the box office, the film at the time took a smashing opening proving yet again 'Thala' is the "King of Opening".

Now, 15 years later, Ajith, Vijay and Suriya’s films are set for a clash of the titans battle at the box office later this year on Diwali day. First up, it was announced last year itself that Suriya’s upcoming film, Suriya 36, to be directed by ace filmmaker Selvaraghavan under the Dream Warrior Pictures banner with Sai Pallavi and Rakul Preet Singh as the female leads would be a Diwali 2018 release. So far, no changes seem to have been made to those plans.

Next, Ajith’s Viswasam will be a reunion for the superstar with director Siva for the fourth consecutive time and a second continuous partnership with Sathya Jyothi Films after their previous smash success, Vivegam. As of now, production is set to kick-start by this month or the start of February with the search for the female lead and a music director still ongoing. The makers during the announcement of the film’s title made it clear it would be a Diwali release and it looks like those plans are still on.

Finally, Vijay’s next tentatively being called Thalapathy 62 kicked off production yesterday with a formal pooja. Although no details on Vijay 62 have been revealed as yet, this film being directed by A. R. Murugadoss under the Sun Pictures banner with music by A. R. Rahman has Keerthy Suresh playing the female lead and was cryptically confirmed for a Diwali 2018 release by the director yesterday. Incidentally, the filmmaker dropping such a mysterious hint is not new since he had done the same for his Thuppakki and Kaththi, which you can read more about here.

If the makers of each of these films, Viswasam, Thalapathy 62 and Suriya 36 stick to their plans, it would without a shadow of a doubt be a spectacular Diwali for fans.
