The Padma Shri director Mani Ratnam's most ambitious project is Ponniyin Selvan which has raised the anticipation and joy amongst the audience since it is based on the epic of the same name. There were unofficial updates on the movie's cast that including Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai and Vikram to name a few. While things were going on optimistic note for the team, the actor turned director Manobala, in one of his latest interviews that Ponniyin Selvan is a highly unlucky project. He also stated in the interview that earlier MGR, then Kamal, followed by AV Meiyappa Chettiar and now it is the ace director.

"After Bahubali resulting in a humongous success, making a period film has been on many directors' wish list" he added. It is to be noted that between the years 2009 and 2010 Mani Ratnam kick started Ponniyin Selvan first with Mahesh Babu and Vijay. But reasoning the budget constraints, it was dropped then.
