Poi/ Abaddam: Audio release

K. Balachander’s 101st movie named Poi in Tamil and Abaddam in Telugu, is due to be released in the near future. As announced by galatta.com earlier, the audio release of Poi/ Abaddam was held at a grand function on the evening of 12.2.06 at Madras University Centenary Hall. It was a grand gala affair, with attendance “by invitation” only.

If you were lucky enough to be invited, you would have got a chance to see all the top persons of Tamil, Telugu and Kannada film world. The show began with an orchestra which played songs from K. Balachander’s evergreen movies, bringing back memories of his masterpieces which are still evergreen and popular. S.P.B. Charan sang the songs, with his troupe. The traditional lamp was lit by the daughter of Prakash Raj, the producer of Poi.

Nagesh, Kalingar Vaali, Jayanthi, Sivakumar, superstar Rajinikanth, Parmashree Dr. Kamal Haasan, and the one and only K.B. graced the dais. Welcome address was given by Prakash Raj, compering was by Ramesh, hero of Duet.

Kamal Haasan released the first cassette, which was received by Rajinikanth. Kamal described KB as a “rajarishi” and everybody agreed with this complimentary description. Many of the leading lights of today’s cine world accepted that they are discoveries of KB during his 40 years in the film field, and his nurturing and encouragement has brought them to their present positions, for which they will be everlastingly grateful to him. Vidyasagar has composed 10 songs for the film, and all 10 were played (audio only) at the function. Vidyasagar has also composed a special song in homage to KB, and this song was also played at the function. This song was very much appreciated, and brought forth spontaneous standing ovation to the master. It was less of a audio function, and more of a celebration, a family function, a meeting of the disciples of KB with their guru. There were several group photos taken of KB with his disciples.
