Legendary Carnatic singer Balamurali Krishna passed away at his Chennai residence today. He was 86 and had not been keeping well for the past few days. He had received the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honour, for his outstanding contribution towards Indian Art and has conferred the prestigious National Award twice, apart from a series of state honours.

In 2005, French government honoured him with the 'Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.' Born in Sankaraguptam, Andhra Pradesh, he was often seen as the face of Carnatic music in India.
