Jyothirmayi, the stupid cop!

The moment a woman gets ready to don the khaki uniform to enact the role of a cop on screen, every one thinks a new Vijayashanthi-aspirant is born. But if you’ve seen Vedigundu Murugesan, youknowthat the lady cop played by Jyothirmayi is far from being an action lady, and that’s what interested the actress the most.

“When I heard the script, I fell in love with it. There’s a common notion that if a lady plays a cop, it has to be the Vijayshanthi-type of role. My role in Vedigundu Murugesanwas starkly different. In fact, when I told a couple of friends back home that I was playing a cop, they immediately thought that I was going the action way. It was tough explaining to them that I was a ‘stupid cop’,” she says. “It’s nice because it’s an unusual role and there was nobody I could model myself upon!”

But there was one thing she had to learn before shooting began – to ride a bike. “When I came for the photo shoot, I was told that I had to ride a bike for the shoot that would begin in a week’s time. Unfortunately for me, a cycle was the most I could handle. It was a challenge to learn riding a bike in such a short time,” she recalls. She is now working on a Malayalam movie opposite Suresh Gopi, but is looking forward to good offers in Tamil as well, insisting she is comfortable with glamour roles too.
