Gandh inspired by Naalu Pennungal
Noted Marathi filmmaker Sachin Kundalkar, whose third film Gandh (Smell) won rave reviews at the�ongoing Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) for his impressive scripts and direction, said that Gandh was inspired by internationally reputed Malayalam director Adoor Gopalkrishnan's Naalu Pennungal which revolves around four women: a virgin (Geetu Mohandas), a prostitute (Padmapriya) and�a housewife (Manju Pillai). Kundalkar was speaking to the media on Monday.
"My film Gandh is an ensemble of three stories and all are interconnected with the notion of smell. The three stories are based on different characters, their lives and problems. While the first half of the script was written by my mother, I wrote the rest," said Kundalkar, a graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
Naalu Pennungal is the adaptation of four short stories written by Jnanapith award winner Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai. It has already been screened at over 20 international film festivals. Its world premiere was at the Toronto International Film in September 2007. In November, it was released in a selected number of theatres in the state.
