Released in 2015, actor Dhanush starred in Maari, and the film went on to become a smash success at the box office.
Fast forward to 2018 and we now have a sequel titled Maari 2 in development.
Balaji Mohan returns to directing Maari 2 with Dhanush reprising his role as the friendly local rowdy under the Wunderbar Films banner.
Up until now, production has been progressing at a steady pace with initial plans reportedly to get the film released in May.
Those plans were believed to have taken a shift when it was announced that another one of Dhanush’s highly anticipated films, the action gangster drama, Vada Chennai, would come out in June as a Ramzan release.
Meanwhile, director Balaji Mohan took to Twitter to make an announcement on Maari 2’s progress as well as the release plans stating around 40% of filming has been wrapped up and the film would come out in the second half 2018.
Happy that #Maari2 shoot is progressing at brisk pace & is 40% done. Will resume after the strike & targeting release in the second half of 2018 oiii¿½i¿½ii¿½i¿½™iii¿½i¿½ii¿½i¿½ @dhanushkraja Sai_Pallavi92?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Sai_Pallavi92 Krishna?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Actor_Krishna @ttovino @varusarath @thisisysr pic.twitter.com/YXCSoaOw0C

Maari 2 enjoys an ensemble cast starting with Sai Pallavi as the female lead.
Actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, who has been tight-lipped about her character, is said to be playing a district collector with slightly negative shades.
Krishna Kulasekaran will reportedly be giving company to Dhanush in a vital supporting role.
Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas will be seen as the prime antagonist with menacing ambitions in the film.
Composer Yuvan Shankar Raja returns to score music for a Dhanush film after nearly a decade when the two last featured in the blockbuster Yaaradi Nee Mohini in 2008.
