Dhanam: Music Review

Dhanam's story is tailored around a family of traditional Devadasis through generations. Dhanam (Sangitha also spelt Sangeetha), the youngest member in the family, initially refuses to carry on the family's tradition. However, she succumbs to it at a crucial point in her life. What forces her to do so and what was the problem that overcame her perseverance forms the plot.

Ilayaraja has composed the music for this serious movie. 'Ilamai Kanavugal' has a rich tempo and an impressive rhythm. Karthik and Rita have rendered the number and the combination intrigues listeners. 'Kannukku Enna' is a soft, classical duet by Prasanna and Sriram Parthasarathy. The song has the maestro's signature touch. Full of melodic ripples, it is certainly the most outstanding number in the album. Next is the much talked-about 'Koothu Onnu Koothu Onnu' in Ilayaraja's exclusive voice. The composer has reserved this extraordinary number for himself. His voice and rendition give life and soul to the song. 'Dhanam Dhanam' is a chorus by Karthik & Co. The song's lyrics praise the protagonist of the movie. 'Kattilukku Mattumdana' is another gem by Ilayaraja. This song too has a lyrical emphasis. Strong and punchy, the lyrics assume a stronger facet in the maestro's voice. 'Ulagam Ketkudu' is a solo by Sunitha Sarathy, who has presented the meaningful song without disturbing its originality. 'Unakkulle Urukkiren' is a lovely duet by Prasanna and Sriram Parthasarathy. The song is the motif in the album.

Ilayaraja takes us on a nostalgic tour through his compositions for Dhanam.
