Slumdog Millionaire, which gave AR Rahman two Oscars marked its 10th year of release on January 23rd and the team recently celebrated the occasion with the presence of AR Rahman, Gulzar, Anil Kapoor, Sukhvinder Singh, Ila Arun among others.
AR Rahman's eldest daughter Khatija joined with her father on stage for a small interview session. Khatija hosted the interview dressed up in a saree and niqab which was later criticized by many on social media stating that the attire might be forced by her father AR Rahman.
Later, AR Rahman posted a tweet saying, "The precious ladies of my family Khatija ,Raheema and Sairaa with NitaAmbaniji #freedomtochoose" along with a picture that had his two daughters Khatija and Raheema, his wife Sairaa, posing along with Nita Ambani in which Khatija was also wearing the niqab as her sister Raheema and mother Sairaa are not veiled.
Khatija has also come out with her own statement regarding the criticism. On her Facebook page, Khatija posted,
"The recent conversation of myself on stage with my dad has been doing the rounds although I didn’t expect such an overwhelming response. However, there were certain comments which said that this attire is being forced by my dad and that he has double standards. I would like to say that the attire I wear or the choices I make in my life does not have anything to do with my parents. The veil has been my personal choice with complete acceptance and honour. I’m a sane mature adult who knows to make my choices in life. Any human being has a choice to wear or do what he/she wants and that’s what I’ve been doing. Hence, kindly don’t make your own judgements without understanding the exact situation."
