For a while now, it was known that Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film Pad Man was being prepped for a Republic Day release.

Directed by R. Balki under the joint production of Columbia Pictures, Hope Productions, KriArj Entertainment and Mrs Funnybones Movies banners with music by Amit Trivedi and cinematography by P.C. Sreeram, Pad Man is a biopic on Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu, who championed the cause for menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a machine that produces low-cost sanitary napkins.

Pad Man features Akshay Kumar in the lead role along with Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor as the female leads and was being promoted aggressively for a January 26 release. However, that is not the case to be anymore.

Akshay Kumar has now made it official that Pad Man will not be hitting screens on the said date to pave way for a clear release for the epic period drama film, Padmaavat.

Formerly titled Padmavati, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Aditi Rao Hydari has seen a lot of controversy since the day of its production to the landmark judgement by the Supreme Court of India earlier this week clearing it for a nationwide release without any ban.

Akshay Kumar’s decision to pull out his Pad Man to make way for a solo release for Padmaavat goes on to show that solidarity does exist in Bollywood and is a sign that not everybody agrees with what’s being said by a few.

As of now, Pad Man has been postponed to a release on February 9.
