Touring Talkies Movie review
Director SA Chandrasekar is back after quite a hiatus with Touring Talkies, and he also stars in this movie with Sunu Lakshmi among many other beautiful belles for company. Music is by Ilaiyaraaja and Arun Prasath is the cinematographer for this movie.
This is a unique movie in the sense that the movie has two different stories, one in each half.
The first half sees Anthony a 25-year-old christian guy falling in love with a Marwadi girl Hema Malini (Papri Ghosh). With the complete blessings of his mother, he decides to marry her but when he waits for her at the church altar, she doesn't turn up. Anthony comes to know that after knowing of her love, Hema Malini's parents leave the place and go off to some unknown place. Wanting to know what happened to her, Anthony doesn't marry and over 50 years pass. The 75-year-old Anthony (SA Chandrasekar) decides to go in search of his lady love to Simla, not minding even his health issues. Why does he go in search of her and whether he finds her, forms the rest of the first half.
The second half of the movie is based on a village and a ruthless family that controls it. The father (Jayapalan) and his son (Robo Shankar) are involved in a number of illegal activities, including sand quarrying. There is an orphaned girl (Sunu Lakshmi) in the village, whose only love in life is her younger sister. In an incident, the younger sister is raped and murdered but it is made to look like a suicide. However, the elder sister comes to know it is cold-blooded murder and wants to avenge it at any cost. Who raped and murdered the young girl? Was justice meted out to the criminals? Watch Touring Talkies to know.
Director SAC has taken utmost care to etch out each character and has gotten everything, including the casting perfect. After all these years behind the camera, his appearance on screen is brilliant. The ache and loss portrayed through his character as Anthony touches the heart. Papri Ghosh, despite being a newcomer, has given a sterling performance. Sunu Lakshmi is the star of the second half and steals the show. Robo Shankar has shown that he is capable of doing a wide gamut of roles and is not limited to comedy alone. All the artistes who lend support to the cast play their parts perfectly. The molestation and murder in the second half creates a deep impact on the minds of the viewers. Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja is at his creative best and the songs are haunting. The beautiful locales of Shimla have been captured in all their glory through Arun Prasath's lens. The innovative way of getting in two complete stories in a single movie makes for compelling viewing.
