Thaarai Thappattai Movie review
Producer: B Studios
Cast: Sasikumar, Varalakshmi
Thaarai Thappattai focuses on the traditional dance form Karagatam and has Saiskumar and Varalakshmi in the lead. Sasikumar plays Sannasi, a person who runs the Thaarai Thappattai troupe. The multitalented Sannasi can play all the musical instruments, including the nadaswaram and the thavil. Varalakshmi plays Sooravali, an artist in this troupe. Set in Tanjore, the film narrates the love story of the rugged dancer Sooravali (just like her name) and troupe owner Sannasi. Soon, trouble comes in the form of a government servant RK Suresh, who is madly and deeply in love with Sooravali. The love triangle gets interestingly after the real motive of Suresh is unveiled. However, by the situation forces Sooravali to marry Suresh.
Varalakshmi has showcased an electrifying character on screen. She is the rugged, manly dancer, who is often seen with bottles and cigars. The transition of Varalakshmi will leave you speechless. She definitely needs a special mention.
Sasikumar gets a perfect character and he does it with ease. Another major highlight of the film is RK Suresh, who makes a stunning debut.
Bala's raw screenplay is packed tightly with emotions.
Ilaiyaraaja's music is simple and soothing.
Bala's brutality and in-depth scenes might restrict the family audience from watching it on screen.
After a point, we feel that there is nothing new from the National award winning director.
As publicized, the film doesn't have an in-depth focus on the traditional karagattam dance form. The regular detailing, which is very visible in a Bala's film, is missing from action.
Verdict: A raw attempt, definitely not for the weak hearts.
