Poovarasam Peepee Movie review
Coming from V Talkies and Baby Shoe Productions, Poovarasam Peepee is the story of three school kids and the adventure they embark upon in their summer holidays. Director Halitha Shameem has come up with the celluloid version of India's answer to Enid Blyton's heroes on paper - The Secret Seven and The Famous Five!
The movie opens to the last day of school for our three 6th standard heroes - Antenna alias Harish (Praveen Kishore), Venu Kanna (Gaurav Kaalai) and Kapil Dev (Vasanth). A very mischievous trio, they get caught trying to burn their books. Looking to enjoy their summer holidays, they are playing in the river in the rain, when they happen to witness four men dragging along a lady to a nearby shed. Totally disturbed by this incident, they are all the more saddened to know that she is found dead the next day, with the villagers claiming it to be because of a flash flood. Not entirely satisfied with this explanation, the trio decide to investigate into the murder themselves and identify the killers to the public. What eventually starts out as just an amateur investigation, leads the three boys deeper and deeper down a dark alley and they find out many startling truths along the way.
Just at a stage when they are not sure how to expose all this to the public, they come across a HAM transceiver and unknowingly start their own FM station - PeePee FM 88.8. Using this as a medium, the kids start exposing all the wrongs happening in their village and all the bad guys behind it. But, can they achieve their goal against a group of ruthless murderers? Will the three boys friendship survive the trials and tribulations of growing up and the passing by of girls in their lives? What will happen if one of the bad guys is somebody very close to the boys? Watch Poovarasam Peepee on the big screens to know all the answers!
Director Halitha Shameem should at the very outset be applauded for taking up such a common yet innovative subject. The way the story of 3 small town kids has been handled would sure want all of us to take a look back at our own childhoods and the summer vacations we spent at our villages. The perfect understanding of the setting and the way the characters have been built up without any overt heroism or larger-than-life image and the subtle underplay of the supporting characters stand out. Some dialogues in the second half just keep the viewers in splits - especially the "Tamizh Thaatha yaaru" scene. A very good job on the screenplay without any lag at any point. Aruldev's music is good and the nativity feel has been well captured. The 3 kids have performed very naturally and have given life to their characters. The 'Angry Birds' song is very hum-worthy. The only thing that could have been better is the duration, which can be trimmed a bit to ensure the movie moves faster. But, not at one place does one find anything jarring in the narration. The supporting cast played by Thegidi fame Kaali as Magudeeswaran, Sai Hari as RS Shanmugam, Varshini as Lollipop and Agalya as Bujji, have done their parts very well.
An SPI Cinemas release, Poovarasam Peepee produced by Manoj Paramahamsa and Dr. Sujatha Chenthilnathan is a definite winner and a very good launchpad for Halitha Shameem into Kollywood.
