Parijatham Movie review
The expert storyteller and director Bhagyaraj, has had quite an interesting trip down the movie lane, from being assistant director, to director and then actor. This man who has managed to weave magic on the big screen with his smart screenplay, strong storylines and punch dialogues, is back with a bang! He has flicked his magic wand once again, for the movie Parijatham in which he has introduced his own daughter Saranya as the heroine.
The story is so intricately woven with a healthy mix of comedy, sentiments and seriousness. We can see Bhagyaraj’s expert handiwork in the screenplay throughout the movie and especially in the climax. Saranya’s acting is so good, that Bhagyaraj is definitely one proud and happy father!
The hero of the movie Malayalam actor Prithviraj has impresses us once again with after his debut into Tamil cinema as a villain in the movie Kanaa Kanden.
Parijatham is a beautiful blend of love, suspense, comedy and sentiments backed by a strong storyline. It tells the story of Sumathi (Saranya) who is the daughter of a millionaire merchant called Textile Subramaniam (Sarath Babu). Due to unforeseen circumstances the millionaire loses all his fortune. Sumathi doesn’t lose heart and takes up a job working for Seetha in her house. Kind-hearted Seetha develops a liking for Sumathi, and is terribly impressed with her character, especially after she realizes one day that Sumathi has the gift of penning stories.
She urges Sumathi to narrate one of her stories to her. As Sumathi keeps telling Seetha her story, Seetha pictures her son Surendar (Prithviraj) and Sumathi as the hero and heroine in her mind’s eye. The only part of the story Seetha doesn’t like is the end in which the hero and heroine part. At one point she says” I can’t accept the parting of my son and you.”
Seetha plans to get Sumathi and her son married when Surendar and his father are away from home. She tells her son that she has found the right girl for him. But the story takes a sudden turn, and tragedy strikes. Before Surendar returns Seetha passes away without telling him who the girl is.
The next half of the movie takes many interesting twists and turns, with Surendar searching for the girl his mother wanted him to marry and Bhagyaraj trying to bring the two together.
One scene is especially commendable, when Prithvi asks Saranya if she knows who the girl is. The expressions and maturity Saranya displays in her acting makes us wonder if this really is her first movie! She handles tough scenes with such ease and grace that she proves that she is no lesser than her father as far as acting goes. Saranya leaves a lasting impression behind at the end of the movie.
Prithiviraj has tried his hand at comedy and performed well at it in the first half of the movie. In the second half his search for the girl chosen by his mother is very realistic. Does Prithvi find the girl his mother wanted him to marry? What more lies in store for them?
Bhagyaraj has given a climax with the appropriate mixture of comedy and seriousness.
The song “Unnai Kandaenae...” makes the audience to keep humming the song long after the movie. Click here to listen to the tunes of Parijatham.
