E Movie review
A story unlike all others in the Tamil film industry! National award winner S.P. Jananathan has an efficient hold on the reins of the movie. He has opted for an international issue, and deftly conveyed the story with a right dose of commercial elements and has steered E towards definite victory.
Jeevaa as E (short for Easwaran) lives in the slums of a city with his grandmother and thick friend Tony (Karunaas). Both of them are involved in petty thieving, and are used to regular lock-ups by the police. E is a person without any morals and would do anything for money. Jothi (Nayantara) moves into this area with her family.
One of the most reputed physicians in the city is Dr. Ramakrishnan (Ashish Vidhyarthi), who is known for helping the poor. But he has another side to him. The doctor experiments on the poor people with medicines rejected abroad without their knowledge.
In a chance meeting between E and Dr. Ramakrishnan, E saves the doctor’s life from Nellai Mani (Pasupathy). The doctor lures E with a fortune provided he kills Nellai Mani. But Nellai Mani and E team up. E starts bargaining with the doctor for more cash.
Meanwhile, E befriends Jothi for her money. But Jothi falls truly in love with E. Jothi, who realizes E does everything for money, tries to reform him, but in vain. On the other hand, the friendship between E and Nellai Mani grows deeper. Nellai Mani reveals to E the reason he wanted to kill Dr. Ramakrishnan to E. The turning point is when E realizes that the evil doctor is directly responsible for the untimely deaths of people close to him.
Jeevaa has sparkled, without any of the popularly traits of heroism! His performance is realistic to the core, with his stained teeth and filthy clothes, to every dialogue delivered by him! Nayantara is stunning in a very different role, has delivered a class performance and makes our hearts heavy in the scene where she breaks up with E. Karunaas has done a good job is conveying the depth of friendship. The man who steals the show is Pasupathi in the character of Nellai Mani. He has given a remarkable and lasting performance in the role.
This movie E, goes beyond the normal lines and boundaries of Tamil cinema. Director Jananathan has made his mark again with E. He has infused different concepts like the lead pair breaking up, into Tamil cinema. The dialogues reflect reality in many occasions.
V. Selvakumar’s sets of a slum are brought to life by N.K. Ekambaram’s cinematography. Srikanth Deva’s music adds strength to the movie.
In a nutshell, E is a brave sparkling movie and a MUST watch this Diwali!
