Aviyal Movie review
Director Karthik Subburaj's second anthology Aviyal is here to make a mark. The film is an anthology (collection of short films) of five independent films directed by Alphonse Puthren of Premam fame, Shammeer Sultan, Mohit Mehra, Lokesh Kanagaraj and Guru Smaran. Bobby Simha and Nivin Pauly has played important roles in Alphonse's film while the rest are newcomers.
Here we go...
The film begins with an intro scene by Shammeer Sultan and makes no mistake in conveying the structure of Aviyal. And, then the short films unfold.
Mohit Mehra’s Sruthi Bedham is a story of a young man who falls for his Chitti (Mother's younger sister), who is just one year elder to him. If a girl can marry her thaaimaaman, why not this? The film is a fun-filled ride with elements of noir and blackmail.
Cast: Amrutha Sreenivasan and Rohit.
Kalam by Lokesh Kanagaraj is about a filmmaker whose story gets stolen by a pickpocket and the rest is a battle between the two. The film starts off well but loses the grip in the mid-way.
Cast: Deepak Paramesh
Next in the line, Kanneer Anjali, by Guru Smaran. Two friends embark a journey to Rameshwaram to perform the last rituals of their friend. In addition, it also has horror and family drama woven into a drug-smuggling plot. The draggy screenplay makes it not so tasty.
Cast: Mosses, Sharath
Eli by Alphonse Putharen is the final and the stunner. The film begins with a gangster narrating a story and raising the curiosity to peak. It has everything--from comedy to shootouts to lovemaking. Truly, a stunner.
Cast: Bobby Simha, Nivin Pauly
