Vishnu Vishal was last seen delivering 2 movies in 2018, Ratsasan directed by Ram Kumar and Silukkuvarpatti Singam directed by Chella. While the latter opened to mixed reviews, the former went on to become a blockbuster, opening to positive reviews from both the audience and critics. However, the movie was not recognized in the majority of the award events. Taking a dig at the recently held popular award show, Vishnu Vishal revealed his disappointment on his film, Ratsasan not being nominated in any category. Vishnu Vishal wrote on his social media handle, "RATSASAN not nominated in any category in yet another ‘AWARDS’ :) :) ‘PUBLIC ACCEPTANCE IS THE REAL AWARD’  ....thank u all for the luv u hav showered on this movie:)  dir_ramkumar IM PROUD OF UR SCREENPLAY  and @GhibranOfficial BGM  n @Sanlokesh EDIT pattern"

Apart from fans, a couple of people in the industry also extended their support to Vishnu by putting out tweets, comforting him. It was also hugely disappointing to the Tamil cinema industry and its fans that none of the Tamil films (except Baaram which won the Best Tamil Film award) won the 66th National Films Awards, 2019, despite producing quality and critically acclaimed films.
